PREVIEW

Middlesbrough and Sunderland meet this evening at the Riverside for a place in the fifth round after there was nothing to separate the clubs on Wearside. Arsenal await the winner in the next round, so there’s plenty for the sides to fight for.

Tony Mowbray’s side put in a good shift up at the Stadium of Light, but they were unable to hold out having taken the lead through Barry Robson. Boro have drawn their last two Championship games – most recently at the Riverside to Crystal Palace – and this has left them sixth in the table.

Sunderland’s terrific form under Martin O’Neill continued at the weekend as the Black Cats secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory at the Britannia. The three points lifted the Black Cats into eighth in the Premier League and just six points off Liverpool. O’Neill has helped guide Sunderland to five wins in six league games and they are one of the form clubs in the top-flight.

It’s not just at the top end that O’Neill has turned Sunderland’s fortunes around as the side are now looking very strong at the back. The 1-0 win at Stoke was the third consecutive game without conceding a goal and that’s where Middlesbrough’s problems lie. Boro have scored only four times in their past six league fixtures, so I’d recommend an away win at around 1.93 on BETDAQ.

RECOMMENDATION: (1-10 points)

Back Sunderland at around 1.93: 4 points

Tuesday’s Return: -4 points
