Chelsea have one foot in the Europa League final after David Luiz’s last-gasp goal in Switzerland last week gave the Blues a 2-1 win over tonight’s rivals FC Basel. That was nothing less than they deserved after a decent display against tricky opponents who had been given a lifeline with a pretty soft penalty three minutes from the end.
But Chelsea didn’t give up and, although they should be wary of over-confidence, should wrap up the tie with victory at Stamford Bridge later. They are around 1.51 on BETDAQ to win with the Swiss visitors at around 7.
Basel were hammered 3-0 at home to Lucerne on the weekend and the club heads to London on a run of form that has seen them win just once in seven outings. They have also failed to win any of their previous seven away European matches.
Rafael Benitez’s men have won their last seven in west London in all competitions and are unbeaten in 12 European home games, winning ten, and in 16 against non-English sides. In 28 European home games played by English sides against teams from Switzerland in Europe, excluding qualifiers, there has only ever been one away win when Grasshoppers Zurich beat West Brom 3-1 in September 1981.
All that points to a home win and a second successive European final for last season’s Champions League winners. The hosts should be able to shoulder the burden of a -1 Asian handicap at around 1.84 on BETDAQ.
