LEOPARDSTOWN GOES AHEAD DESPITE HEAVY RAIN: This afternoon’s prestigious card at Leopardstown will go ahead as scheduled, in spite of heavy overnight rain and a morning inspection.

14 millimetres of rainfall has turned the ground soft, but the high-class card at Leopardstown has been given the go-ahead.

Horse Racing Ireland tweeted: “Leopardstown to proceed today as planned, ground now soft following 14mm rain overnight. Forecast showers today with winds easing.”

There are two Grade One’s on the card and the uber competitive Paddy Power Chase at 2.55.

1:20 Paddy Power Dial-A-Bet Chase (Grade 1) (5yo+, Class 1, 2m 1f, 7 runners) Arvika Ligeonniere won, what turned out to be, a thoroughly unsatisfactory John Durkan Chase – although that of course was no fault of his own. The overnight defection of Flemenstar and the early fall of Sir Des Champs meant he only had Rubi Light left to beat, which he did by nine lengths. Sizing Europe, winner last year, looks a better option today. He failed to get home over three miles at Down Royal last time and this is much more his bread and butter. He was brushed aside by the brilliant Sprinter Sacre in the Champion Chase at Cheltenham but the 19 length defeat says more about Sprinters brilliance than anything negative about Sizing Europe.

1:50 Paddy Power Future Champions Novice Hurdle (Grade 1) (4yo+, Class 1, 2m, 7 runners) Moyle Park has done nothing wrong in winning three starts, two of which came in bumpers, but I can hardly be rushing to back him at around 2.47 on BETDAQ for this Grade 1. He might well be up to it. But several of his rivals, including stable companion Arctic Fire, already have proven form in better grade so I’m hitting the lay button on the favourite.

2:55 Paddy Power Chase (Grade B Handicap) (0-145) (5yo+, 3m 100y, 28 runners) Unsurprisingly it’s 10 the field on BETDAQ. can only be a tentative selection but the Mullins/Walsh runner Rockyaboya looks of interest in the place market at around 5. He proved he could handle a big field and a big race with an excellent fourth behind Cootamundra in the Ladbrokes Troytown Handicap Chase at Navan.

SHAMROCK’S BETS:
NAP: Sizing Europe (1.20 Leopardstown)
LAY: Moyle Park (1.50 Leopardstown)
PLACE: Rockyaboya (2.55 Leopardstown)
