NO MAN RIVER: SHAMROCK seeks out the best bets on Friday’s card at Royal Ascot from an Irish perspective.

I wouldn’t want to lay over 3/1 about Ryan Moore walking on water at Royal Ascot this week, so the thought of laying him at around 4/1 to win the King Edward VII Stakes onboard Ol’Man River is not really a bet for me either.

However, I do want to be against Ol’Man River who, for me, has become bitterly disappointing this season and the place market on BETDAQ makes most appeal.

He was a huge talking horse even before making his winning debut at the Curragh and became ante-post Derby favourite after his return to the course to win the Group 2 Beresford Stakes. That was on similar ground to today.

The ground or grade isn’t a worry as such but his current well-being is. Even allowing for his two runs this season being at the highest level – they have been inexplicably poor and I couldn’t back him with any confidence today. He failed to beat a single horse home in the 2000 Guineas, finishing last of the 18 runners and beaten 47 lengths and there was little improvement last time out in the Dante Stakes at York when stepped up in trip but beaten over a furlong out and he finished sixth of the seven runners.

Maybe the tongue tie will spark an improvement? Maybe the extra trip? However on the evidence of this season he has to be a place lay for me at around 2.78 on BETDAQ.

Irish trained runners dominate the Coronation Stakes at 4.20 with the Irish and English 1000 Guineas runners-up Found and Lucida doing battle.

Preference at the prices has to be for Lucida who was only headed by Legatissimo in the dying stages at Newmarket.

In the finale, Aloft is the class act having finished second in the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster last season. He looks a stayer in the making and looks set to give Aidan O’Brien another win in this race in which he has excelled in over the years.

SHAMROCK’S BETS:
NAP: Aloft (5.35 Royal Ascot)
PLACE LAY: Ol’Man River (3.05 Royal Ascot)
NEXT BEST: Lucida (4.20 Royal Ascot)
