SHAMROCK AT TRAMORE: SHAMROCK heads to Tramore for their opener this evening. And there’s a very simple question to be answered. Can the official ratings be trusted ?

Too bad to be true. What a shocking run from the nap Three D Alexander in the opener at Leopardstown last night. Only beat one horse home and I’m still struggling to come to terms with that result.

We need to bounce back, hopefully in the opener at Tramore this evening at 5.15.

It’s a claimer over 1m 4f and as usual in these events it comes down to how literally you trust the official ratings. If you do, you’ll be Hevelius who is 9lb clear of his nearest rival AND 3lb better off at the weights to boot.

The problem with following ratings blind though is they can often relate back to performances from a considerable time ago and that;s certainly the case with Hevelius (formerly trained on the flat by Walter Swinburn) and there can be no guarantee that he will reproduce anything like the form his rating suggests he is up to.

I always prefer recent form, and case in point tonight is Mighty Whitey who has been running well over jumps and on the flat too. His fourth to Treasure The Ridge over this trip at Galway reads well in the context of this race.
