Two more Grade 1’s to look forward to today on the third day of Leopardstown’s Christmas Festival.
1:55 Squared Financial Christmas Hurdle (Grade 1) (4yo+, Class 1, 3m, 5 runners)
Arctic Fire has gained two well deserved wins this season and was particularly impressive in the Grade 1 Hatton’s Grace Hurdle at Fairyhouse last time out when beating Alpha Des Obeaux (stable companion who reappears today) by four lengths having traveled well throughout the race. So many times he’s had to play bridesmaid to more illustrious stable companions but that has masked, to some extent, that he’s a class act in his own right. The surprising thing about this race is that he is odds-against on BETDAQ, 2.28 at the time of writing, given he is rated 17lb clear on official ratings. The gamble of course is the distance – he tries the three mile trip for the first time but has given every indication over two and a half miles that he will be equally as effective and he is my Monday NAP.
3:05 Lexus Chase (Grade 1) (5yo+, Class 1, 3m, 6 runners)
A rare top flight race that has eluded Willie Mullins in recent years but surely that will be put right this afternoon. He trains half of the six-strong field including Don Poli, winner of the RSA Chase earlier in the year at Cheltenham. He warmed up for this with a win at Aintree last time out (saddle slipped but still beat Many Clouds by four lengths) and Bryan Cooper has chosen him over the Gigginstown owned chief market rival Sir Des Champs who drifted to big odds in play on BETDAQ before eventually winning cosily on reappearance after lengthy absence at Thurles.
