19 GRADE ONES FOR HURRICANE FLY: He did it again. SHAMROCK reflects on Hurricane Fly’s fourth win in the Irish Champion Hurdle and also looks ahead to Ayr today where there’s a host of Irish raiders.

Monday’s racing in a moment but what a superb performance from Hurricane Fly at Leopardstown yesterday winning the Irish Champion Hurdle for a fourth time and in doing so emulating the great Istabraq.

He looked beat, for my money, coming to the last when the younger Our Conor looked set to go on and win – but Hurricane Fly battled bravely under Ruby Walsh and wasn’t going to be denied his 19th Grade One victory.

A relieved Willie Mullins said after the race. “That was a huge relief. I have huge respect for the horse to do what he did, coming off the bit of work he did during the week.”

“If he had been an ordinary horse he wouldn’t have run. It was his worst bit of work ever.”

“I was so disappointed coming off the gallops. I was saying to myself, ‘Is the dream over with him and has he had enough?’.

No Irish racing today – well not officially !!! There’s enough Irish raiders on the Ayr card to get stuck into and make you feel at home.

The meeting got the go-ahead after a morning inspection but it’s sure to be testing.

Gordon Elliott and James Lambe have several runners between them and should strike early with the Gordon Elliott trained Layla Joan in the opener. She looked good when winning a maiden hurdle at Fairyhouse on debut and was also a winner between the flags. This looks an easy opportunity.
