GORDON LORD BYRON: SHAMROCK reflects on the win of the Tom Hogan trained Gordon Lord Byron on Saturday in the Champions Sprint at Ascot.

No Irish racing until Wednesday this week.

Yesterday, I was full of praise for Forgotten Rules who landed the opener on Saturday on the Champions Day card at Ascot but there was another Irish trained success in the sprint that followed with the remarkable Gordon Lord Byron.

His participation was in doubt for most of the week because of the heavy ground which many (myself included) thought would count against him.

However, trainer Tom Hogan gave him the green light and he came with a rare old rattle to peg back Tropics (who traded around 1.1 in running on BETDAQ) and actually won going away by a length and a half.

It’s no surprise that Hogan has more international trips planned for the globetrotter.

He said: “We’ll continue on travelling. There’s plenty of invitations for him. He’s not Breeders’ Cup eligible, but I’m sure a deal could be made with the Breeders’ Cup committee. I’d be definitely interested.”
