SHAMROCK REFLECTS ON LEOPARDSTOWN’S HENNESSY: And AP McCoy grabbed all the headlines again after his success onboard Carlingford Lough.

It was a weekend when the racing script was ripped up and glued back together again in a different order.

Of course it all revolved around AP McCoy and his decision immediately after winning onboard Mr Mole at Newbury on Saturday to retire at the end of the season.

Whilst the retirement day obviously had to come it still sent shockwaves throughout the racing and sporting world.

In his very next ride he was unceremoniously dumped at the first flight by the fall of Goodwood Mirage so who knew what to expect at Leopardstown on Sunday?

Winners would have been the correct guess.

On what became his final day riding at Leopardstown he warmed up for the main event, the Hennessy, when Sort It Out won in the famous colours of his boss J P McManus but the big story was still to come.

McCoy produced 4/1 chance Carlingford Lough with a perfectly timed challenge in the Hennessy to beat Foxrock by three-quarters of a length.

McCoy said: “You can’t fight fate and it was obviously meant to be the way things happened. Fair play to John Kiely. Every day I’ve been on this horse he’s produced the goods. JP’s family are here and my family are here. It’s brilliant. It’s what’s meant to be. It’s amazing the people here at Leopardstown today. I have to be careful I don’t get too emotional, it’s not good for the image.”

Carlingford Lough put himself right in the Gold Cup picture and is now around13 on the BETDAQ ante-post market.
