WINNING NAP AND NEXT BEST: Champion tipping from SHAMROCK on Sunday when his NAP TARFASHA WON 11/10 and NEXT BEST STEPPER POINT WON AT 9/4 at the Curragh.

It’s hard to consider Irish Champions Weekend as being anything other than an outstanding success.

The on-course attendances rocketed – and both Leopardstown and the Curragh staged an absolute feast of flat racing over 48 hours.

It’s so hard to pick highlights – on Sunday Brown Panther’s romp in the Irish St Leger was pretty impressive and gave both horse and trainer a deserved first success at Group 1 level. Richard Kingscote deserves plenty of praise too for a superb front running ride.

Roger Varian was another training on a successful raiding mission. Just 24 hours after winning the Doncaster St Leger with Kingston Hill he landed the Moyglare Stud Stakes with Cursory Glance.

It was great to see my nap Tarfasha bounce back to form in the Blandford Stakes – she now looks destined for end of season targets at Longchamp and/or the Breeders’ Cup.

The other Group 1 of the day went, as expected, to hot favourite Gleneagles in the Vincent O’Brien National Stakes. He looks set for the Dewhurst before a crack at the Guineas next season.

A new week of racing in Ireland starts today at Listowel where they stage a mixed card.

In the maiden at 3.35 I prefer the chances of Dermot Weld’s Comtesse to the Aidan O’Brien trained Adeste Fideles who was a little disappointing when a beaten odds on favourite at Gowran Park last time out.

Comtesse was also a beaten odds on shot last time but it looked in a better contest and she was only beaten by a length.
