NAAS OFF: Shamrock gets chance to reflect on a day it all went wrong for him on Saturday.

Firstly, Naas is off today following a 7.30am inspection due to a waterlogged track.

Irish Turf Club officer Cliff Noone said: “Parts of the track are waterlogged. It’s raining now and there’s no chance of the meeting going ahead.”

Secondly, after my tipping effort yesterday that will come as a welcome relief no doubt but I can’t let yesterday pass without a couple of comments.

(1) The lay of Boston Bob. For 99.99% of the final quarter of this race I thought I’d collected and it was no surprise to see him hit massive TRIPLE figure odds in running. There was a little bit of Tidal Bay in the Lexus Chase about this race and the way Paul Townend managed to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat and beat Texas Jack by a nose.

After that I might have known then I’d get the flip wrong between Flemenstar and Sir Des Champs in the Hennessy.

(2) I seldom criticise rides but am joining in the widespread condemnation of Andrew Lynch (or his instructed tactics) onboard Flemenstar.

I thought it was a shocker.

At virtually every fence Flemenstar jumped superby and gained an advantage but that was negated by Lynch continually reigning him back. Yes, he is a doubtful stayer at this trip, and no he won’t run in the Gold Cup (BETDAQ latest odds below) – but he’s at his best when jumping for fun and bowling along. This MAY have put some pressure on Sir Des Champs whose jumping was better yesterday but perhaps only because he didn’t have any pressure applied.

I’d much rather of seen Flemenstar have been beaten from a positive ride rather than, in my my mind, an inherently negative one.

A day to forget.
