LADIES DO BATTLE FOR AN OSCAR: Can Nina Carberry land an ‘Oscar’ or Katie Walsh take the podium in the Tipperary Hurdle at Thurles today? Shamrock keeps both ladies happy with a novel betting plan.

It must be the Nina and Katie show. The Misses Katie Walsh (she prefers ‘Ms’) and Nina Carberry (she says it’s ‘Miss’) can surely not miss out on the Tipperary Hurdle for lady riders today (4.55 Thurles).

Their score is 30 hurdles wins between them against a grand (sorry not-so-grand) total of four, yes only four, among the 12 other girl riders in today’s race over the last five years.

Owennacurra Milan is a bit of a bridesmaid and Katie will have to kick on, but the more so Nina. Her mount, Oscar Hill, gets further, so she has to make use of Gordon Elliott’s gelding.

But who cares about the outcome, when you can back both with Betdaq, since they are split in the offers market by Beckwith Star (Miss J M Mangan one hurdle win so far). I have a ‘dutch and double’ strategy.

Back to male jockeyship, how far ahead is Mr Walsh? In the beginners chase (2.55), he stands as tall as the Dublin needle. No Geraghty, Townend, Russell…

So Dare To Doubt (2.55) – whose doubt is, in fact, his jumping ability – has to be my first March nap, since Ruby can slow him down here, jump like an eventer and still win the races.

I shall double Dare To Doubt with both my girls in the ladies’ race; that’s reducing the odds again but, I think, increasing my chances.

What a race, the novice hurdle! Every one’s a winner, but there can only be one today, and that winner could provide a pointer to the Neptune (Monksland beat Lyreen Legend at Naas) or the Neptune.

Lyreen legend ran up to Boston Bob at Leopardstown and now has an Albert Bartlett contender, Folsom Blue, to beat today.

So three Cheltenham races are in the spotlight. I shall be perverse and have an old punt on Hats And Heels. She gets 7lb from the boys, but she has Ruby on board, is 8.4 for our champion trainer and, as a Flemensfirth, will be staying on over this 2m 4f when others have cried enough.
