SHAMROCK LANDS NAP IN IRISH DERBY: SHAMROCK’s nap yesterday, JACK HOBBS, obliged in fine style to win the 150th Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at 10/11.

Nice and easy does it.

It was all very straightforward for the nap yesterday who paid a handsome compliment to Golden Horn by winning the Irish Derby for John Gosden and William Buick.

Golden Horn beat Jack Hobbs in both the Epsom Derby and the Dante Stakes at York and will put his own lofty reputation on the line when he contests the Eclipse Stakes at Sandown Park on Saturday.

Without the presence of his nemesis it was all very simple for Jack Hobbs who became the first British-trained winner of the race since Commander In Chief in 1993 and was also a ‘GOLD BANKER’ and third nap in a row for DAQMAN.

He quickened up smartly to win by five lengths allaying fears that the ground might be too quick.

Gosden said after the race: “It was genuine good to firm ground and it’s nice to see the form from Epsom working out so solidly.

“He did it in good style. He got a nice split at the head of the straight and then William waited with him, which was right. You don’t want to start pushing too soon. This old track takes some getting, but I love the way he finished his race out.

“Quite frankly, it’s solid Epsom form, the second has run a blinder and was third to us at Epsom, so there’s nothing wrong with the form.

“We’ll put him away now and go for the Prix Niel and then on to the Arc. We’ll just try to have two more runs this year, he needs a holiday now, this boy. He’s big, rangy and quite light-framed and he just needs to fill out.”

The feature race on today’s Curragh card is the Group 1 Sea The Stars Pretty Polly Stakes at 4.30pm. Classic form is represented by Legatissimo who won the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket and was only nutted on the line by big outsider Qualify in the Oaks at Epsom having traded at the basement price in running on BETDAQ.

It’s quite hard to find any negatives with her apart from price which is always so subjective.

Brooch is hard to assess as she keeps progressing and remains unbeaten. She has gone from maiden to Listed to Group 3 to Group 2 and fully deserves a chance at the top table after an impressive win in the Lanwades Stud Stakes at the Curragh last time out. The distance certainly shouldn’t be an issue and the nap play for me on Sunday is to back her on the BETDAQ place market where we will need a 1,2,3 finish for a return.
