PHOENIX STAKES DAY AT THE CURRAGH: SHAMROCK looks at the two Group races on the card at the Curragh this afternoon including the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes at 4.05.

4:05 Keeneland Phoenix Stakes (Group 1) (2yo, Class 1, 6f, 9 runners)

No surprise to see Aidan O’Brien launching an assault on this prize and he saddles four of the nine runners. It could well be a case though of quantity over quality as unusually none of his four runners are trading at single figure odds. The market leader is Kool Kompany who has only been beaten once in six starts (in the Coventry Stakes) and is a tough campaigner from the Richard Hannon stable. I’d just be a little worried though that the amount of racing he has had may catch up with him and preference is for the lighter raced Anthem Alexander who was mid-division on her debut here but then bolted home by seven lengths to win her maiden at Tipperary and before stepping up in class to justify favouritism in the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot.

4:35 Phoenix Sprint Stakes (Group 3) (3yo+, Class 1, 6f, 7 runners)

In the absence of Eddie Lynam’s two star sprinters who are ‘over qualified’ now for this Maarek looks a solid favourite. His last win came in a Group 2 at York and he also ran well over C&D last time out behind the Lynam trained Slade Power.

SHAMROCK’S BETS:
NAP: Anthem Alexander (4.05 Curragh)
NEXT BEST: Maarek (4.35 Curragh)
