SHAMROCK LOOKS AHEAD TO LEOPARDSTOWN: Four Grade 1 races on a star-studded Hennessy card. He landed his NAP and ONLY bet on Saturday with Aengus WON 1/2.

Aengus landed the nap yesterday, he made slightly harder work of it than his 1/2 starting price might have indicated.

The main action of the weekend has arrived with Leopardstown’s Hennessy card.

There are four Grade 1 races – and more good news it’s set to be a sunny day !!

Latest going from the track is:

HURDLE TRACK:YIELDING, SOFT in PLACES
CHASE TRACK:YIELDING, SOFT in PLACES

1:15 Gala Retail Spring Juvenile Hurdle (Grade 1) (4yo, Class 1, 2m, 8 runners)

I thought Kalkir was disappointing over course and distance last time out in the Knight Frank Juvenile – a Grade 2 and would be nervous of supporting him at current odds to go one better in a grade better race. I’ll take a chance with Vercingetorix who was hugely impressive on debut when winning in heavy ground at Limerick. Of course, this represents a huge step up in class but he was well above average on the flat in France when trained by Andre Fabre and could easily be up to the level required to win this.

2:15 Deloitte Novice Hurdle (Grade 1) (5yo+, Class 1, 2m 2f, 9 runners)

Alvisio Ville impressed on his hurdling debut here over the two mile trip and the form of that race took a timely boost when Aengus (my nap yesterday) won at Naas. Whilst he could easily be good enough I think Identity Thief represents the value today. The Henry de Bromhead trained runner has won a bumper and a maiden hurdle here at Leopardstown where he beat Snow Falcon who won easily next time out at Navan.

2:45 Flogas Novice Chase (Grade 1) (5yo+, Class 1, 2m 5f, 9 runners)

Willie Mullins has won the last two renewals and Valseur Lido will be favourite to complete the hat-trick. He’s hard to oppose given he already has a Grade 1 win in the bag – the Drinmore Novice Chase at Fairyhouse in which he ran out an impressive eight length winner.

3:50 Hennessy Gold Cup (Grade 1) (5yo+, Class 1, 3m, 8 runners)

On His Own looks to be getting back to top form given his excellent second in the Lexus Chase over the same course and distance in December. He renews rivalry with Lord Windermere – just a short head split the pair in the Cheltenham Gold Cup last year and it needed a lengthy stewards enquiry to rubber stamp that result. Foxrock looks a sporting option. The youngest runner in the race he won a Grade A handicap here last time out and deserves a crack against his more experienced rivals.

SHAMROCK’S BETS:
NAP: Vercingetorix (1.15 Leopardstown)
NEXT BEST: Identity Thief (2.15 Leopardstown)
TREBLE: above two with Valseur Lido (2.45 Leopardstown)
WIN AND PLACE: Foxrock (3.50 Leopardstown)
