CLONMEL OIL CHASE DAY: Two Graded races on the Clonmel card this afternoon including the featured Clonmel Oil Chase at 2.10pm which has attracted seven runners.

Jumps racing cranks up another gear this afternoon on Clonmel Oil Chase day.

2:10 Clonmel Oil Chase (Grade 2) (4yo+, Class 1, 2m 4f, 7 runners)

The favourites have an outstanding record in this race but this year’s renewal looks more competitive than usual. Five of the last six winners have started at odds-on and the other winner was a 5/4 shot.

Monksland has been pitching in at the top level and this looks more his grade if none the worse for a tumble at Down Royal last time out. He seldom puts in a round without jumping blemishes so whilst his receipt of weight is respected it may still be a white-knuckle ride.

Alelchi Inois is consistent but I just fear Grade 2 is a bridge too far. I also worry he’s not quite in the same form as he was in 2014.

I’ll stick with Outlander who seldom seems to run a poor race. He’s finished runner-up in his last three starts but two of those were Grade 1’s.

2:40 E.B.F. T.A. Morris Memorial Mares Chase (Grade 3) (4yo+, Class 1, 2m 4f, 6 runners)

Vroum Vroum Mag won this at prohibitive odds last season and Mullins should retain the prize through Westerner Lady who was six in a row before being beaten by Alpha Des Obeaux at Cork last time out.

SHAMROCK’S BETS:
NAP: Outlander (2.10 Clonmel)
NEXT BEST: Westerner Lady (2.40 Clonmel)
