SHAMROCK BIDS FOR A ROYAL ASCOT NAPS HAT-TRICK: After GLENEAGLES (NAP) WON 8/15 on the opening day and FREE EAGLE (NAP) WON 5/2, SHAMROCK bids for another nap on Thursday. Will it be hats off for SHAMROCK??

Free Eagle landed the nap on Wednesday but only just and needed a dollop of Royal Ascot good luck too as runner-up The Grey Gatsby had to be snatched up on two occasions before the home turn.

This was nothing to do with Free Eagle who was out in front by the time The Grey Gatsby got in the clear but the runner-up failed by just a short head and was in front just after the line. The fine margins of this game on display again.

Winning trainer Dermot Weld said after the race: “”He got a brilliant ride, he’s a very good horse. When you’ve got a good horse it makes the training easy, but it hasn’t been easy with him. He got a heavy head cold a few weeks ago and I thought today was very much in doubt, but we got him right on the day that mattered.”

“The Irish Champion Stakes will be on the agenda and I’ve always thought the Arc would be the race for him.”

I also want to be with Weld today with his Forgotten Rules in the Gold Cup at 4.20.

The five-year-old is unbeaten in three flat races and also won a Punchestown bumper on debut in impressive fashion.

Stamina certainly won’t be an issue – but the going might be – even with some overnight watering this ground will be the fastest he has encountered to date but he has won twice on good to yielding so it’s not as if we are dealing with a horse who has only won on a heavy surface. He also proved he liked Ascot with a win in the Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup last October. It was heavy that day but even then he was staying on strongly suggesting he should relish the extra half mile.

I think he has much stronger credentials than Aidan O’Brien’s Kingfisher who was the narrow winner of a Leopardstown Listed race last time out and is the sole representative from a yard that has a record to be feared in the Blue Riband event of the week.

Elsewhere on the card, the Irish domination of the Ribblesdale Stakes should continue with the Jim Bolger trained Guineas winner Pleascach likely to go off a short price. She got the better of Found at the Curragh and is fully expected to see out the extra trip today.
