LEOPARDSTOWN ON THURSDAY: SHAMROCK highlights his best bet on Thursday’s evening card at Leopardstown.
There’s an interesting head to head battle in the opening Racecourse Of The Year Race at Leopardstown tonight with the unbeaten pair Port Douglas (Aidan O’Brien) and Sanus Per Aquarm (Jim Bolger) taking each other on.
Port Douglas made an impressive debut over course and distance last month, beating Fisherman’s Blues by three and a quarter lengths.
There’s a rather tenuous line of form that links tonight’s two principals. From Eden finished fourth – beaten 7.75 lengths by Port Douglas and From Eden then went on to also finish fourth behind Sanus Per Aquarm when that one made a winning debut over tonight’s trip at the Curragh. From Eden was beaten 6.5 lengths that day which, allowing the fact that he may have improved a little from debut, would suggest there is precious little to choose between the pair if that form line was taken literally.
Narrow preference has to be for Sanus Per Aquam. His trainer Jim Bolger also runs Gleine which will no doubt help with team tactics and I think that Port Douglas may be seen to better effect over longer distances.
The Dermot Weld trained debutant Palmetto Dunes receives weight from the penalised winners but would need to be extra special to win this on debut and so far is not a positive on the early BETDAQ market.
Interesting race though and one very much to keep an eye on for the future.
