SLIGO SURVIVES: Good news that Sligo have passed their morning inspection and tonight’s meeting, starting at 5.35, goes ahead.

Sligo got the thumbs up this morning and tonight’s card goes ahead on heavy ground.

After the course abandoned their card on Wednesday I wasn’t hopeful of racing today but Horse Racing Ireland tweeted “The going @SligoRaces passed fit to race today following morning track inspection. Ground is heavy. 4cast dry today.”

Forget horses that go on soft ground – it may be more like horses that are good swimmers are the ones you need to look out for tonight! Especially in the three mile maiden hurdle at 8.20pm. The other problem for punters is that there hasn’t been much recent form on ground as testing as it will be tonight.

Best bet on the card for me is Cinder Rua in the 2m 4f maiden hurdle at 7.15pm. She had her first start for her new stable here last time when a modest third of five. However the step-up in trip tonight should help and she did run one of her career better races last year on heavy ground at Limerick when second over a 2m 3f trip.

The Gordon Elliott trained favourite is Miss North Light who has no experience on ground anything like as testing as tonight.

The big race on the Leopardstown card tonight is the Group 3 Ballyroan Stakes at 7.30pm. Aidan O’Brien’s Fields Of Athenry is progressive and should land the odds. He stormed home by an eased down 10 lengths in a Listed race here over 1m 6f last time out and remains very much a St Leger candidate.

SHAMROCK’S BETS:
NAP: Cinder Rua (7.15 Sligo)
NEXT BEST: Fields Of Athenry (7.30 Leopardstown)
