NAP PIPPED A HEAD: SHAMROCK was denied a 9/4 winning nap at York yesterday by a head. He is back at the Knavesmire for hopefully better fortune today.

Together Forever rallied in the Musidora Stakes and I thought for one moment was going to get up to beat the odds-on Star Of Seville who seemed to idle when in front.

I’m fairly sure over the longer and more testing trip I’d want to be on the runner-up who will be 4lb better off in the Epsom Oaks and it’s no surprise to see the BETDAQ market reflect that with Together Forever slightly shorter.

The Dante Stakes looks the being the most significant Derby trial of the season with a thrilling renewal in prospect.

Aidan O’Brien last won it in 2010 with Cape Bianco and he saddles two today – John F Kennedy and Ol’ Man River who are both out to restore their reputations after bitterly disappointing efforts last time out.

John F Kennedy was a notable flop in the Ballysax Stakes (Group 3) at Leopardstown when last of three at odds of 1/4 – beaten over 10 lengths. He was favourite for the Derby but after that run was pushed out and stable companion Ol’Man River took over favouritism. However, he ran too bad to be true in the 2000 Guineas and was a tailed off last of 18, beaten 47 lengths.

Whilst it wouldn’t be the biggest surprise in the world to see either bounce back I can’t be backing them with confidence after those previous runs.

For the nap, I like Patsio in the opener at Tipperary. He is hugely consistent and surely deserves a win after a series of credible placed efforts. This is a poor contest despite the field size.
