BIG DAY AT GOWRAN PARK: All eyes will be on the County Kilkenny course this afternoon when they stage the John Mulhern Galmoy Hurdle and the ever competitive Goffs Thyestes Handicap Chase.
Huge day of racing at Gowran Park this afternoon with the two graded races on the card.
Latest ground news is that the going remains heavy (chases) and soft to heavy (hurdles). The weather forecast is for a dry day today.
2:15 John Mulhern Galmoy Hurdle (Grade 2) (5yo+, Class 1, 3m, 5 runners)
Zaidpour won this in 2012 but ran an absolute shocker in this last year when odds-on and comes into this on the back of a disappointing effort in the Christmas Hurdle at Leopardstown which is a key form race for today#s event. Briar Hill is the preferred of the Mullins runners according to the BETDAQ market and is also the choice of Ruby Walsh. Winner of the Cheltenham bumper in 2013 Briar Hill fell in the Albert Bartlett last season and was also a disappointment in the Christmas Hurdle finishing last of the eight runners. Better bet today might be Monksland who was third in the Christmas Hurdle behind Lieutenant Colonel after a lengthy break. He’s been frustration for Noel Meade with niggly problems keeping him off the track but the Leopardstown race was promising and hopefully the patience can be rewarded.
3:15 Goffs Thyestes Handicap Chase (Grade A) (5yo+, 3m 1f, 17 runners)
On His Own, winner of this in 2012 and last year, is missing this year leaving top weight Djakadam has the sole challenger for Willie Mullins. The six-year-old hasn’t been seen since finishing a disappointing eighth, when favourite, in the Hennessy at Newbury. He made several bad mistakes that day. Whilst this is an easier prize it doesn’t particularly bode well that he underperformed in a big field race and his wins have only come in small fields. He’s also quite inexperienced and for me, with top weight, has to be a place lay at around 1.9.
