DAWN APPROACH SURPRISE: Jim Bolger’s runner is heading for Royal Ascot on Tuesday. SHAMROCK previews the two Group races on the card at Leopardstown tonight.

Ante-post backers were caught on the hop yesterday with the surprise news that Dawn Approach could run in Tuesday’s St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.

He is currently trading at around 2.59 on the BETDAQ ante-post market after trainer Jim Bolger told www.godolphin.com: “He’s been left in the St James’s Palace Stakes and, subject to a satisfactory piece of work on Thursday, he is an intended runner.”

Godolphin’s racing manager Simon Crisford said: “Jim is very happy with how Dawn Approach has done since the Derby and he is keen to let him run at Royal Ascot if everything continues to go well with his preparation between now and the race on Tuesday.

“We had a discussion this morning and decided to let him run if he pleases in his work on Thursday.

“Jim has been delighted with how relaxed Dawn Approach has been in his training.”

Dawn Approach and Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Magician are trading at around the same price on BETDAQ.

Mooqtar, the nap yesterday, was a bitter disappointment at Fairyhouse.

There are two Group races on the card at Leoparstown tonight:

6:55 Ballycorus Stakes (Group 3) (3yo+, Class 1, 7f, 6 runners)

Lily’s Angel is an admirably tough performer who won a Group 3 narrowly at Lingfield (soft ground) before finishing third in the Abu Dhabi Stakes (also Group 3) on better ground at the Curragh. She may be better with give in the ground and has had a relatively busy season. Reply looks a big danger. He romped home in a Listed race at Naas having previously run well behind Hitchens at the Curragh. Ground and trip should prove ideal here. Sruthan looked a very useful prospect in his first two starts before seemingly failing to stay over 1m 2f last time out.

SELECTION: Reply (NAP)

7:30 Ballyogan Stakes (Fillies’ Group 3) (3yo+, Class 1, 6f, 12 runners)

A really competitive renewal in which the most poignant winner would be Tickled Pink for Lady Cecil who currently heads the market. She was stepped up to Group 2 last time for the Duke Of York Stakes but struggled and finished 9th of 17 but could well be suited by the better ground tonight and the drop back from Group 2 to Group 3. She has the best draw in one.

SELECTION: Tickled Pink (NEXT BEST)
