GRADE 3 ACTION AT CLONMEL ON TUESDAY: The Surehaul Mercedes-Benz Novice Hurdle is the feature race on the card at 2.35pm.

Trainer Liz Doyle had a nightmare weekend after losing stable star Le Vent D’Antan who suffered a fatal fall at Leopardstown on Sunday.

Hopefully she can receive a welcome tonic in the Grade 3 Surehaul Mercedes-Benz Novice Hurdle at Clonmel this afternoon where her Kauto Grand Mogul looks to have an outstanding chance.

The lightly raced seven-year-old has only finished out of the frame once in seven starts and that was in the Grade 2 Monksfield at Navan where he finished fourth to Free Expression.

Doyle said: “He didn’t travel very well or jump very well in Navan and I’m hoping we can disregard that run. We finished quite close to Measureofmydreams in a bumper at Fairyhouse last year. The form is there, he’s got every chance, he just needs to put it together. I think he’s good enough to win it. If he puts it all together and jumps well he’s got every chance, so we’re hopeful of a very good run.”

It’s a competitive renewal. Willie Mullins has won the last two renewals and has two in today’s race with solid chances. Measureofmydreams caused a huge shock when beating 1/4 stable companion Milsean in a four runner race at Thurles last time but is an unknown quantity at this level.

I think the biggest danger to Kauto Grand Mogul may come from the other Mullins runner Roi Des Francs who had them well strung out when winning at Thurles last month.
