SHAMROCK BACK AT GALWAY: A good start to the 2014 Galway Festival for SHAMROCK with a winning nap and a successful lay on Monday. He returns to the West Coast action today for the seven race mixed card getting underway at 5.05.

Not too bad a start to the Galway Festival on Monday.

Jamaica, the NAP, was backed off the boards so hopefully you took better prices earlier on BETDAQ compared to the rather miserly SP of 4/9. The lay of Bobby’s Heart was also successful – unplaced at 7/4 – and I also put in a good word for Beckwith Star, 12/1 winner of the handicap hurdle. The opening selection Henry Higgins was a non runner.

Back to Galway for day two…..

5:05 Topaz Novice Hurdle (4yo+, 2m, 7 runners)

Shield has done well for Aidan O’Brien so far this season but is still prone to the occasional jumping error. At around 2.78 on BETDAQ he looks a tad short for my liking – especially under a double penalty. Preference is for Rich Coast who was very impressive when winning a big field maiden hurdle at Tipperary on the same good ground expected today. He travelled particularly well that day and showed he has transferred his ability from the flat, where he was a Listed winner, to the jumping game.

5:35 Latin Quarter Chase (5yo+, 2m 6f, 12 runners)

Domination has been excelling on the flat – winning the two mile Ascot Stakes at the Royal meeting and then going down by just a head and a neck and Sandown in a two miler. As a chaser, I think it’s fair to say the jury is still out. He made a winning chasing debut in weak event at Limerick but then returned to the course and finished a well beaten fifth of six having not jumped well. He was last seen when chasing home Alelchi Inois at Killarney. Again, the prices dictate and I am more of a layer than a player at 2.7.

6:05 Topaz E.B.F. Fillies Maiden (2yo, 7f, 12 runners)

It wasn’t an easy start for Dermot Weld on the opening day but he did get his winner with the impressive Timiyan. He relies on the debutant Chinese Light here who is bred to get further. It’s a tricky event – Aidan O’Brien has two debutants of which Together Forever is seemingly preferred but he also races Cocoon who has attracted early market support. No play for me.

6:40 Topaz Mile Handicap (3yo+, 1m 100y, 21 runners)

Despite the competitive look to this race it often produces a winner in single figure odds. There’s a strong UK challenge which includes the Brian Ellison trained top weight Balty Boys and he also runs Baraweez who was disqualified after winning at Newcastle. George Baker also runs Jack’s Revenge who looks of interest with Joseph O’Brien onboard. However, the play for me is Bold Thady Quill in the BETDAQ place market. He has been running well and keeps bumping into good horses but I see no reason why he can’t grab a place again here in this company and looks a big tempter at current odds of around 8 to be placed.

7:10 Caulfieldindustrial.com Handicap (55-80) (3yo+, 2m, 19 runners)

The Willie Mullins trained Alileo looks of interest in a wide open contest. He seemed to relish this trip on the flat when finishing second to Massini’s Trap at Killarney and can go one better here. Dermot Weld’s Hidden Universe is an obvious danger on the pick of his form but seemed to have lost some of his sparkle in his last few starts.

7:45 Caulfield Industrial Athlone Handicap (55-80) (4yo+, 7f, 19 runners)

Just when you thought you had enough of competitive handicaps – along comes another competitive handicap !! Six Silver Lane comes into this on the back of a good second at Killarney. That looked like a return to form and he is recommended win and place.

8:15 Caulfieldindustrial.com E.B.F. Maiden (3yo+, 7f, 8 runners)

Antique Platinum is 1.25 on the win market and looks nailed on for Dermot Weld in the finale after an excellent debut when fourth at Naas. The biggest danger, Righway, is now a non runner!
