AFTER NAPPING GLENAGLES ON TUESDAY: SHAMROCK is back at Royal Ascot in search of another winning NAP on Wednesday.

No awards for originality (or indeed price) but Gleneagles landed the NAP at Royal Ascot on Tuesday when winning the St James’s Palace Stakes and following up his two Guineas successes in grand style.

It was the first leg of an Irish hat-trick on the opening day with Clondaw Warrior winning the Ascot Stakes for Willie Mullins and the final race on the card, the Windsor Castle Stakes, going to the Aidan O’Brien trained Washington DC.

Best Irish hope on day two looks to be the Dermot Weld trained Free Eagle who has been well supported for the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes.

The trainer holds him in the highest regards but he has a lengthy absence to overcome. He missed his intended reappearance at the Curragh due to a head cold.

The four-year-old has only had four career starts and hasn’t been seen since finishing third to Noble Mission in the Qipco Champion Stakes at Ascot last October on heavy ground. However, he had previously flown home to win a Group 3 at Leopardstown by an impressive seven lengths on ground conditions similar to today.

It’s disappointing news that American star California Chrome misses this race but Free Eagle can start making up for lost time and see off the main challengers which include the French trained Ectot and Gailo Chop.

In the opener, Sir Isaac Newton is my place bet of the day at around 3.9 on BETDAQ. Ivawood is a worthy favourite here having finished third in both the English and Irish Guineas but Sir Isaac Newton won his maiden well at Gowran Park and looks the sort to improve significantly.

SHAMROCK’S BETS:
NAP: Free Eagle (4.20 Royal Ascot)
PLACE: Sir Isaac Newton (2.30 Royal Ascot)
