KERRY NATIONAL DAY AT LISTOWEL: SHAMROCK looks at the flat action which includes a Listed race on the mixed card.

Some days you simply get it wrong and I’m afraid it was a day to put my hands up and admit defeat yesterday:

I thought New Alliance should have been an odds-on shot – it started 2/1.
I didn’t think Aidan O’Brien’s Smuggler’s Cove could improve enough to beat her – it did.
I was wrong as the pair finished first and second but in the wrong order.

Kerry National Day at Listowel and check out DAQMAN’s extensive preview of the big race in today’s column.

It’s a half jumps and half flat card and the big flat race of the day is the Edmund & Josie Whelan Memorial Listowel Stakes at 3.35.

Aidan O’Brien has won the last two renewals with short priced favourites but the race has a far more open look to it this year.

At the prices, as always, I thought Inis Meain could be interesting coming back after a break.

I always have a second look at a horse after a break at this stage of the season. We’re deep into the flat season and often horses can run moderate races simply through needing a break whereas one coming back from a break can often run well.

Inis Meain certainly has the class for this. He made all to win the Irish Field Alleged Stakes at the Curragh which, like today, was a also a Listed race.

His form with Tarana is interwoven so I expect her to be a big danger.
