LISTOWEL: Big race day with the Guinness Kerry National and a Listed race on the flat to look forward to.
I just didn’t get it wrong yesterday in opposing Shining Emerald in the opener with Aidan O’Brien’s Masai. I ended up with egg of my face.
Shining Emerald bolted home by 16 (yes SIXTEEN) lengths in a seven furlong race with Masai out with the washing. In hindsight it was a poor nap and clearly I should have been more swayed by Shining Emerald’s placed form behind Sudirman.
Back to the track at Listowel today when hopefully my judgement will be a little more accurate for the two big races on the card.
3:25 Edmund & Josie Whelan Memorial Listowel Stakes (Listed) (3yo+, Class 1, 1m 4f, 8 runners)
The ground is sure to be testing (officially soft) which will suit Aidan O’Brien’s Eye Of The Storm here. He won on heavy ground at Galway on his debut and followed up by winning a Group 3 at Newmarket. This season he has finished second in both starts in Group 3 and Listed company respectively at Sandown and Galway. He was narrowly beaten on both occasions and can gain compensation here.
5:10 Guinness Kerry National Handicap Chase (Grade A) (4yo+, 3m, 19 runners)
The last two winners have been at 20/1 and 33/1 and who’s to say there won’t be another boil over in one of the toughest punting races of the season.
Carlingford Lough and Quantitativeeasing fought out the finish of the Galway Plate and will be the starting point for many but I think the angle is to try and find a place bet.
Muirhead was fourth in the Galway Plate and has some ground to make up on the front two but is better in at the weights and can be seen to better effect over the slightly longer trip here. He looks a tempter at around 4 on the BETDAQ place market.
