THE BETDAQ PUNTER showed a profit last weekend thanks to the great run of Petit Robin at Ascot.

He returns this week with bets on the football, racing and NFL.

A strange week with Christmas splitting it down the middle and a few days with no football, no racing – and I had to go looking elsewhere for a few small bets…..

Friday

A good day turned in to a nonentity of a day thanks to King’s Palace getting beaten at odds on at Ascot and after such a promising start as well. Puffin Billy (1.55 BETDAQ) and Simonsig (1.3 BETDAQ) had seen my odds on theory go to plan, but one loser at 1.9 was enough to put me back to square one, but nothing lost I suppose, and as I ignored the all-weather from both Lingfield and Wolverhampton (I just didn’t like the look of the cards), that was that for the horses. In the evening we had a couple of football matches in the Championship to keep me interested with a 50/50 strike rate by the time the final whistles had blown. Blackpool losing at home to Wolves caught me out I confess (I took a tasty 1.95 from the BETDAQ layers and thought I had nicked some value), but Hull who are on a bit of a high at the moment, landed my bets at 2.7 on BETDAQ (thank you), though to be fair they were not to level stakes and I didn’t make very much at all (something is better than nothing).

Saturday

Is it me or are there some really strange football results that seem to be ordained to ruin my BETDAQ balance? Seriously though, I have reduced my bets accordingly because it’s all gone wrong, only to watch the teams I regularly back (Watford, Cardiff, West Brom and so on) decide to return to form when I have deserted them. At least the horses went the right way for me with my one and only bet (a win and place at big odds on Petit Robin) coming off when he managed a very gallant second on horrendous ground while trying to lump top weight to victory. I even managed to better the odds I suggested last week with some 29.0 the win (so what I agree) and 7.1 the place so all’s well that ends well Saturday evening and enough left over to crack open a bottle of vino with the dinner.

Sunday

Always a quiet day but with no racing in the UK, and Thurles not really my thing (though I am learning) I had a quick look at the football. Tempted by an odds on double on Manchester United (1.75) on BETDAQ and Chelsea (1.35 BETDAQ) was way too short and I am so glad I failed to make the effort with United only managing a draw. Sadly, I was more enthusiastic about the American Football (even if I fail to understand a word of it), and put on a seven team accumulator as promised, all odds on but adding up quite nicely in total. Naturally, it didn’t quite pan out as expected with five winning and two losing but that was close enough to make me want to try again the next time there are enough games to make it worth my while.

Monday

No racing today am I feeling withdrawal symptoms – not yet but it does seem strange and I do love messing about with a few bets here and there which invariably adds a few pounds to the BETDAQ balance and brings a smile to my face as well. With nothing left to bet on (no cricket, no football, no darts – I checked), I had to spend time with the family and watch TV- not the best night of the year to have to do so!

Tuesday

Happy Christmas one and all and again, precious little to get my teeth in to on BETDAQ though cricket has caught my eye and I have been sent a few cricket tips from my whites wearing friends. Not everyone celebrates Christmas so the India v Pakistan T20 game was on, at least giving me something to speculate about. Naturally, I (and they) got it horribly wrong, as I backed India at odds on (1.85 BETDAQ), only to see Pakistan score an historical victory and rob me of my money/book vouchers on the day.

Wednesday

Like a plane crash survivor crawling across the desert without water, Boxing Day is like an Oasis serving ice cold drinks – and free of charge. Football and racing caught my eye (as usual), though I had to be careful not to over do it, I have given enough to the BETDAQ layers in recent weeks thank you very much. I decide that after recent results I would leave the football alone, which was probably a good thing (Manchester City were sure to have been on my win list), so I settled for the horses which is within my comfort zone. Not everything went according to plan but I had a lot more winners than losers and made a good profit on the day to sensible stakes as well. Being a blue nose I went to see Everton play Wigan so had to rely on my tablet to place my bets but that is so easy with BETDAQ these days that those sat around me must have wondered why I kept on cheering when we weren’t even on the ball? Anonis at 3.9, Dynaste at 1.75, Grands Crus each way at 11.5 the win and 3.0 the place (only third but it’s a profit), and Grouses Lodge (2.1) all on BETDAQ were my “winners” on the day, though there were losers as well including a big bet of mine on Saint Roque at Kempton (3.4 but still running), so it wasn’t all peaches and cream!

Thursday

A strange old day with half my friends back at work like me, and the others left at home eating left overs – not really sure who came out best on that one? No football to take my attention so horse racing it is and more money in to the BETDAQ account. It isn’t brave intelligent or informed to back the short priced favourites but while it works, who cares, and my two main bets both scored and did so impressively. Sanctuaire found life a lot easier than when trying to burn off Sprinter Sacre last time out and duly obliged at a very generous 2.5 on BETDAQ, while in Ireland, their new “talking horse” is Jezki who was just as impressive at the same price. Yes I did mess about with a few short priced accumulators that failed to pay out (there is always one and in my case it was Quality Mark at Lingfield – a Jeremy Noseda trained 1.5 shot who only managed a well beaten third!

Conclusions:

Bet of the week – Petit Robin each way – even the place at BETDAQ odds of 7.1 made my week and gave me the funds for my other winning bets

Disaster of the week – None really, though a shame my American Football accumulator went down so narrowly.

Something for the weekend:

This is the bit where I either turn in to a hero with a ton of profit or more likely make a complete idiot of myself, but it has to be done. Football is my true love (if not necessarily the sport I am most successful at), so I will start there with three value selections for a small bet that could reap rich rewards, avoiding the odds on shots after recent debacles. Personally, I do not believe that Sunderland can have completely turned around their form despite their most recent results, and will start with Tottenham Hotspur at BETDAQ odds of 2.2. Next up I suggest Wigan could pull off a bit of a shock away to Aston Villa after impressing me at Goodison Park on Boxing Day. Villa are leaking goals and devoid of confidence which may mean Wigan can play them off the park and at odds of 3.5 on BETDAQ I cannot resist. Lastly (no need to be too greedy), how about Tranmere at home to Scunthorpe in Division One at BETDAQ odds of 2.1? Second top v second bottom makes those odds look generous and with three small doubles and a treble we might get a good run for our money.

As for the American football, well I never give up that quickly but will drop my accumulator from seven selections to a more realistic five –well that’s the theory anyway. Prices are skimpy as I write (come on BETDAQ layers, offer us a sensible price if you expect us to place a bet?), so my choices are limited, as is the size of my bet! Cincinnati Bengals (1.8), will be added to the Buffalo Bills (1.5), Green Bay Packers (1.6), New Orleans Saints (1.5), and lastly the Washington Redskins (Monday, 1.5) for a silly little 9.7 accumulator for a point.

Lastly, with the rain still falling pretty much everywhere guessing which race meetings will even be on is an art in itself, but we will have a guess nonetheless and keep our fingers crossed. Depending on how he schools this week Alan King may send Salden Licht to the Newbury novice chase on Saturday and as he is on my “to follow” list what more can I add? A decent hurdler he was off the track for a year and a half before returning over the larger obstacles at Hereford but if he improves for that run (he was weak in the market implying he probably would), then he would have a sporting chance here, and could be worth half a point each way as we slowly build up toward Cheltenham.

This week’s suggested bets (all prices with BETDAQ and correct at the time of writing):

Weekend Football
3 x half point win doubles and a half point win treble (2 points staked in total) on Tottenham Hotspur (2.2), Wigan (3.5), and Tranmere (2.1).

American Football
1pt Win accumulator Cincinnati Bengals (1.8), Buffalo Bills (1.5), Green Bay Packers (1.6), New Orleans Saints (1.5), and the Washington Redskins (Monday, 1.5) for a 9.7 accumulator.

Horse Racing
Half a point each way Salden Licht Newbury Saturday 1.35pm but subject to change.
