THE BETDAQ PUNTER returns with his usual mix of looking back on his betting week on BETDAQ and looking forward to this weekend.

He has bets this weekend in the football and racing.

It was a profitable weekend seven days ago when his bets included Ireland to beat Wales in the Six Nations.

… was that the start of a good week for him ?

Friday

Pinch punch first day of the month and I have decided my punting year starts here. Without naming names I have been looking around for free trials of various tipping services and systems as I continue my search for the elusive Holy Grail – one that makes long term profits and thus pays for my holidays! Ending up with a bit of a mix I reduced stakes and had my first bet on the greyhounds at Romford in the evening, taking the early prices as advised and snapped up a little 4.3 and 3.9 on BETDAQ respectively. They were backed on the day (which seemed promising) but neither made it to the line in front finishing sixth and fourth – not the flying start I had hoped for but tomorrow is another day.  I did also have a bet on the French football (Paris Saint Germain are a team of superstars slowly gelling together), and even the 1.99 on BETDAQ looked like value away to mid table Toulouse and so it proved with a never in danger 0-4 victory – though my profit did not cover my losses on the dogs sadly.

Saturday

The best day of the week bar none, football, horses, greyhounds, rugby – you name it, there was something for every punter. I landed my one and only Rugby Union bet when Ireland won in Wales at odds of 2.35 on BETDAQ (thank you layers, I love you all), though the footie didn’t go as planned – QPR and Norwich played out a 0-0 draw though when Rangers got a penalty I really thought my bet was going to be landed. I did get “told” to have a bet on both Wigan v Southampton (2-2) and Blackpool v Barnsley (1-2) to go over the 2.5 goals mark at odds of 2.1 each and both those bets were (obviously) landed so maybe the chalice has been found lol? The horses were not so kind (abandoning the hurdle races from Sandown was a bitter pill to swallow), but I was pretty sweet on the chances of the David Pipe trained Top Gamble but stupidly reduced my stake when I saw he was not the forecast favourite. That turned out to be pretty dumb of me as he won very easily at a BETDAQ price of 3.2, but it was only reduced profit not a loss I suppose, and I shouldn’t be so greedy. Avarice also got the better of me at Sandown when I had far too much on Captain Conan at BETDAQ odds of 1.55, and I aged a few years during the race I can tell you. In my eyes he never looked likely to get up but somehow Barry Geraghty conjured one last effort as the leader tired and he got up by a neck though that was enough for me, I quit for the day after that little heart failure!

Sunday

I never really know why they bother to put horse racing on Sundays – it is rarely of any even reasonable quality, there are no big name contests, and even punterholics like me can easily give it a miss. On this occasion I had read (on Facebook I think?) that the Ferdy Murphy trained Divers was fancied at Musselburgh back over hurdles so I had to take note and have a little win and place at 26.5 and 5.9 accordingly. He ran well enough in third to land the place part of my bet though I missed the race because I was watching the Manchester City v Liverpool match. Apart from my win treble which was still running thanks to Manchester United and Port Vale, I had no other interest except City being the last leg, but as we all know now it ended as a draw – am I the only one whose multiple bets always seem to fail on one leg?

Monday

A quiet day with nothing of interest on the football or the horses to be honest, so I had to do a full days work – outrageous. I did get some more greyhound tips through by e mail, this time from Nottingham and shock horror, they both won! 2.1 and 2.6 on BETDAQ was hardly rocket science but they were the only bets given out and the only bets I had so one of my better days recently as I failed to give any of it back to the layers. Rock On Ruby was my sole bet on the gee gees and he did win, all be it in sad circumstances – 2.75 is not a great price to be fair but I never knock a winner and I can only hope you were all on as well?

Tuesday

Port Vale are banging in the goals for fun lately and after winning 3-0 on Saturday how could I let them go unbacked on Tuesday night? Even the mean BETDAQ layers let me have plenty on at 1.66 and another 3-0 made that a clever bet even for the likes of me. The horses did not appeal but I was sent some free golf tips (shop around on the internet, there are loads out there), though at the prices I decided small stakes was the sensible route. So I can’t be accused of BS later I have backed Tim Clark (37.0/6.9) D A Points (132.0/8.0), and Greg Owen (134.0/27.0), so a holiday to somewhere warm if any of those three win then.

Wednesday

I have never bet on football friendlies and won’t be starting any time soon with experimental line ups and sentimental selections and although I applaud England’s win over Brazil, I would never have bet on it and I put my hands up to admit that. For reasons I could bore you with (but I won’t), I feel almost friends with a horse called Jake The Snake who I have been backing and following for more years than I care to remember. Now a veteran at the age of 12 he has now raced 59 times scoring on eleven occasions and although I suspect he owes me some, I cannot resist. Kempton was his venue of choice this evening and when I saw him freely available on BETDAQ at 26.5 how could I possibly resist. For some strange reason I felt an each way bet was too negative, almost insulting to the son of Intikhab so naturally he finished a neck runner up, blowing my cash but at least showing that hopefully he has another win in him before a well deserved and hopefully long and happy retirement?

Thursday

Some days I love reading snippets around the net and others I wish I hadn’t really bothered – today was one of the latter. It seems facebook could be less trustworthy than most as I fell for the idea that the Renee Robeson trained Smart Exit was the proverbial good thing after winning his first race at the eighth attempt at Fakenham. I felt pretty smug when “mugging” the BETDAQ layers at odds of 9.8 early in the morning as he was sent off at 6/1 but as he only finished a disappointing ninth they had the last laugh and I feel pretty stupid, especially as I told everyone I know to get on. I had also heard that Paul Nicholls thought Brinestine was a Triumph Hurdle possible but as I was sulking from earlier I didn’t have a bet – good job too as he fell while weakening anyway, but although I would love to claim I won’t be listening to other people any more, we all know that isn’t true!

Conclusions:

Bet of the week – Two greyhounds on a Monday evening may not float everyone’s boat but with no losses to go with it, my happiest day for a while.

Disaster of the week
– Manchester City failing to beat Liverpool – another point for Liverpool (never good when you are an Everton supporter), and the end of my winning treble as well, spoiled my afternoon.

Something for the weekend:
Don’t tell everyone but the weather may be easing up now, and we may even get the quality racing and other sports that we all deserve. Football always comes first for me and this weekend is no exception, though with so many shocks lately I will be backing off just a little and looking for a few small bets at value prices (well, that is the theory).

First up, Jermaine Defoe is now out for up to three weeks with injury so where will the Tottenham goals come from I wonder? Gareth Bale is the obvious answer I suppose but if he has an off day then they may struggle to cope with the new look Newcastle line up, and at BETDAQ odds of 6.1 the away win, I cannot resist a point just in case.

Stoke seem intent on boring their opposition to death week in week out but I can see Reading pulling off a bit of a shock and they should never be taken lightly as shown last week with a 2-1 win over a resurgent and in form Sunderland. BETDAQ odds of 4.75 are again too high (in my very amateur opinion), and I will risk another point there.

Lastly, as I mentioned earlier, Port Vale are on fire at the moment down in Division Two and 2.1 for the away win seems worth a tickle when they visit Barnet in what is virtually a top v bottom clash. To end with on a football centred weekend by the look of it, I have been a lot more impressed by Ghana than Mali in the African Nations, and I will have a point on them accordingly in Saturday’s third place match. The 2.1 on BETDAQ isn’t a great price but probably reflects their chances, and another point won’t go amiss (I hope).

As for other sports, golf is covered above (my bets are on but I take no responsibility for the outcomes!), and a quick look at the Six Nations Rugby leaves me struggling to find any value so I would rather give them all a swerve this week. The horses look as tricky as ever pre Cheltenham but if I do have a bet then a point win treble on the supposed good things could well be the best way forward. Simonsig looks good for the Game Spirit Chase at BETDAQ odds of 1.75, Silviniaco Conti looks nailed on for the Denman Chase at 1.6, and Un Atout looks worth adding at 2.1 for the Deloitte Novice Hurdle for Leopardstown, and a tasty 5.88 treble – fingers crossed as always.

This week’s suggested bets (all prices with BETDAQ and correct at the time of writing):

Weekend Football
1pt Win NEWCASTLE to win at Tottenham Hotspur at 6.1
1pt Win READING to win at Stoke at 4.75
2pts Win PORT VALE to win at Barnet at 2.1
1pt Win GHANA to beat Mali African Nations at 2.1

Horse racing:
1pt Win treble – Simonsig (Game Spirit Chase, Newbury) 1.75, Silviniaco Conti (Denman Chase, Newbury) 1.6), and Un Atout (Deloitte Novice Hurdle, Leopardstown) 2.1, all Saturday.
