5am (Sunday) Group D rolls on in the early hours of Sunday morning UK time when Australia take on Turkey in Vancouver on WORLD CUP 2026 Betdaq Betting Exchange! . I felt coming into the tournament that Group D was quite possibly the most open Group of the whole World Cup, so this is obviously a huge game for both sides to set the tone. Turkey are ending a 24 year World Cup absence with one of the most exciting young squads in the competition, while Australia are seasoned tournament campaigners who reached the Last 16 last time out. Turkey come into the game as the odds on favourites at 1.75 with Australia 5.7 and the draw is 3.85 at the time of writing.
Turkey last played the World Cup back in 2002 and remarkably finished third! They had to come through the UEFA playoffs, but actually did very well in qualifying to finish three points behind Spain in their Group. They were also promoted to League A of the Nations League, and as I said above they seemingly have superb squad at just the right time. Australia qualified through the AFC third round as runners-up in their group, losing just once across the campaign, though it was a relatively modest level of opposition. The Socceroos keep turning up at World Cups, but in fairness given their qualifying route it would be a surprise if they didn’t.
The story of this Turkey side is its attacking talent. Real Madrid’s Arda Guler and Juventus forward Kenan Yildiz are two superb young players. Behind them sits the experience and quality of captain Hakan Calhanoglu (pictured below) of Inter Milan. That is a spine most teams in this Group would envy, and it is the reason I actually fancy them to top the Group. Obviously we’re going to see what performance level USA bring before this game, but I’d have Turkey as the favourites to top the Group. A fast start here would lay down a real marker. Australia will not make it easy of course, but I do feel the 1.75 offers a shade of value on Turkey.

They have been improving for a few years now, and while sides can fluff their lines when they get to the big stage, it does feel like this World Cup arrives at just the right time for Turkey. The draw is not without merit in a cagey opener, but I just feel Turkey have too much class for this Australia side who might likely try to defend and focus on counter-attacking. At 1.75 they look a fair price given the talent at their disposal, and a win here would be the perfect way to announce themselves. I don’t have a strong opinion on the goals market given how open some Turkey games have been, but I would expect them to have success against this Aussie defence.
