TIPSTERS? DAQMAN IS BEST BY MILE: Daqman lost out by just a few pence yesterday with Mile House (won 6-4) paying for most of his bets, a seventh winner in three days for 78 points profit, while his naps (form 12113012) have accrued 59 points from a 50% strike rate in eight days.
PREMIER LEAGUE FOR FLAT RACING: There are two 10-point bets today but first Daqman goes in for a bit of fortune-telling about the future of our racecourses, as controversy rages at the intended closure of Newcastle’s turf track. English racing will have a premier league in 10 years’, he says.
BIG BETS LIKELY TOMORROW: Daqman, who is leading Pricewise 97-36 in their value challenge, has bets to win 50 (bull’s eye) and 100 points (ton-up) straining at the leash, and his bankers are 106 points up.
CHELTENHAM AND AINTREE FLAT RACING
Dateline: August 29th, 2024. The racing programme released today shows the 15 premier turf courses each have at least two 7-day meets: Ayr, Cheltenham, Chepstow, Chester, Doncaster, Epsom, Goodwood, Newbury, Newmarket (two), Liverpool, Market Rasen, Sandown, Wincanton and York.
It is five years since Hamilton and Carlisle merged with Musselburgh in the second division, Salisbury with Bath, Lingfield with Windsor, Ripon and Pontefract with Thirsk, Wetherby with Market Rasen, and, of course, Ludlow and Ffos Las meetings have all switched to Chepstow.
And it’s 10 years since the haemorrhaging of turf action began at Warwick and Newcastle, which eventually saw AW racing burgeoning to the now 10 different venues.
In Division 3, the controversy over further support for seaside turf tracks at Brighton, Redcar and Yarmouth continued as Exeter, Chepstow and Stratford also claimed ‘holiday’ status.
As sponsors’ money continues to pour into the recently-instituted Flat festivals at Cheltenham and Liverpool, more courses will merge or close like Fakenham and Huntingdon, and retention of the Newmarket July Course remains under fire, adjacent as it is to the Guineas venue.
DEAUVILLE DANCER COULD WALTZ HOME
SANDOWN Henry Candy scored 5-10 last week and Goldcrest (2.00) is his first runner since Sunday. A big, strong filly, her Group 3 run may have been aiming too high.
But the drop right down the scale to class 4 should be a confidence restorer and she has every chance of acting on the ground. I took 4.3 on BETDAQ this morning.
Threes Grand (2.30) might return to form in his first run this year on his favoured ground, which saw him win a class-2 at York a year ago off a 9lb higher mark.
In fact, he’s down more than a stone since last autumn and trainer Scott Dixon has just now returned to form, with two winners from three starters this week. The 8.4 offers on BETDAQ this morning were begging to be taken.
The pair at the front of the market for the last (4.45) – early mouse this morning – don’t appeal, Collaboration because he is still high in the weights for what he’s done in a lack-lustre turf season, albeit with one good run on soft.
And Dance Of Heroes because he obviously has problems, racing only three times. The last two runs will be four and five months apart when he lines up today.
I’ll take Ski Lift (5.4), as a Pivotal on soft ground who has slowly found his form, and the grey Savant (5.9) as a first-time handicapper who’s been learning to settle in his maidens.
THIRSK Rain again forecast, and the Northallerton handicap (3.25) looks set for another turn-up, winners since 2009 including 11-1, 16-1 and 25-1 SPs.
The two-miler at 4.55 is more likely to have a genuine result, since the runners have more time to sort themselves and avoid congestion.
I fancied Deauville Dancer as one of those Sir Mark Prescott sequence horses and he duly landed back-to back wins in the summer, last time on the soft, albeit so slow they had to put the stewards’ spotter car into reverse.
But the ground may have gone against Longshadow, who likes to race on rock-hard surfaces, and Caledonia was getting lumps of weight when he won at Musselburgh.
Big Time Billy should improve on the debut but that was behind Deauville Dancer and Dr Irv has been out of form since the summer of 2013.
ELM PARK MIGHT BE SPECIAL TONIGHT
BANGOR Think It’s All Over? It is now autumn, according to the temperature and the rain, which seems sure to arrive at Bangor, where there is lean fare, runners-wise. Almost as bad as Sandown!
Jonjo O’Neill is currently 8-18 but he and A P McCoy have been set a task with the only McManus runner of the day, Whistling Senator (4.00).
Donald McCain, the leading Bangor trainer, saddles Valleyofmilan and Robert Hennessy sends over Ultra Light, with a 60% record from only five starters on the track.
Ultra Light was one of those three winners in July but that was on firm ground and he had an easy time of it, bossing a small field in a very slow time.
Valleyofmilan also seems to need firmish ground and has never won – never raced, in fact, since his Pointing days – beyond 2m 4f.
Dual course winner Mohi Rahrere is back down in the weights but Susquehanna River and Whistling Senator remain high.
When Settledoutofcourt scored late last year, he quickly put three wins together, and he goes well fresh. Easy but not too soft is his ground preference and he should get that here.
Jockey Craig Nichol is two from two on the horse and his claim reduces the rating to spot on his last-day winning weight. Trainer Lucinda Russell is 4-11 still standing in the last 12 days.
SALISBURY (TONIGHT) Is there a ‘stone bonker’ in the Stonehenge Stakes (6.40)? Stamina-bred Elm Park has also shown some speed and is a Racing Post Trophy entry who will get a strong tow here from Mister Universe, down from a Group 2 at Newmarket but with today’s extra distance unlikely to suit on the evidence of that performance.
Winters Moon also steps down in grade after her third in the Sweet Solera, when she was noted playing up in the stalls and may be regressive.
Runner-up in the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood, Tupi ran well sent to Deauville for the soft ground. But Elm Park cruised his maiden and could be something special.
