DAQ MULTIPLES BIG-RACE DOUBLE IN IRELAND: There’s a big feature-race double today in Ireland, the Ladbrokes Munster National at Limerick and the Irish Cesarewitch, transferred from the Curragh to Navan. 4.25 Limerick (Ladbrokes Munster National) Mouse Morris runs his 2016 Irish National winner, Rogue Angel, and recent scorer Dromnea but the stats tell us to look for a younger horse, and he has Davy Russell aboard Alpha Des Obeaux, aged only seven.
‘Oboe’ was a top-class hurdler, winner of the Galmoy and runner-up to Thistlecrack in the 2016 World Hurdle.
So far, he’s been a nearly horse over fences, third in the Drinmore, fourth in the RSA at Cheltenham, and badly hampered by a faller in this year’s Irish National. Jumps like a dream and should have been toughened up by a respiratory op.
Trainer Morris and jockey Davy Russell are both in hot form, Davy with returns in the last eight days of 23242113210 still standing. Mouse has had just one winner in that time but even his ‘no-hopers’ have been getting into the ‘four’, one of them at 100-1.
Arkwrisht had a handful of these behind him on bad ground for the Kerry National at Listowel. Auvergnat will also love the mud.
Though his mark has gone up for winning the Killarney National (Phil’s Magic fourth) and for running up to On Fiddler’s Green in the Connaught National, he is weighted to beat both today.
Riviera Sun (reserve) and Net d’Ecosse were split by Phil’s Magic at the Galway Festival but neither has won this far. That also applies to the Willie Mullins’ novice Total Recall.
Phil’s Magic had taken revenge at Kilbeggan (Net d’Ecosse third, Tulsa Jack fourth) for an earlier defeat by Rock On Fruity
There are no stamina problems about Tulsa Jack but, though he’s been over hurdles the last twice, the handicapper won’t budge off 134, which is 11lb higher than his last winning mark.
VERDICT: 7.4 Auvergnat and 9.0 Alpha Des Obeaux give me a solid pop at this in the BETDAQ market, where Total Recall looks a false favourite on what he has done and after a long absence, first run for Willie Mullins following moderate handicap efforts, but first try at 3m and, as a Westerner, should like the ground.
20.0 WONDER IN THE CESAREWITCH
5.15 Navan (Irish Cesarewitch) Digeanta’s victory for Willie Mullins aged eight (2015) no doubt encourages the fielding of 19 old-timers today but the winner is not normally older than five, and Digeanta’s stable followed up with a three-year-old last year.
Today’s hat-trick bid with last year’s winning jockey on board is with Gustavus Vassa, another stepped up in trip on his first run for the stable.
Nietzsche was Fred Winter third over hurdles and, discounting his recent run back, he finished the Flat with back-to-back wins a year or so ago.
His trainer, Brian Ellison, who won this race in 2013, has had a poor Flat season (7% strike rate) but has notched a winner under both Rules in the last few days. Nietzsche is huge at 21.0 on BETDAQ. Thus spake Daqman!
Any one of the O’Brien youngsters (and I mean Aidan and Joseph) could be good enough but I’ll stick with a bit more experience.
Another 20.0 shot, Wonder Laish in first-time cheekpieces catches the eye. The one-time Ascot winner for William Haggas was back to form over hurdles on the last day.
