LEANNE HAS GOWRAN ADVANTAGE: Shamrock naps Barry Geraghty’s mount, Leanne, at Gowran Park today, because of her 20lb lower rating in the switch from chases to hurdles.
Take the jockeys’ tip. Though Paul Nicholls and Nicky Henderson have favourites at two meetings in England today, Ruby Walsh and Barry Geraghty stay home for the Gowran Park meeting.
Ruby has five booked rides for Willie Mullins but I’m particularly interested in Barry’s mount on Leanne (3.05) in the mares’ handicap hurdle.
Leanne switches to the minor obstacles 20lb lower than her steeplechase mark and the Racing Post’s spotlight remark about their likely favourite, According To Lizzy, is rather ironic.
They praise Lizzie’s handicap debut because the pair that beat her ‘were running off favourable marks relative to their form over fences.’ I’d say she’s meeting a similar problem today wouldn’t you.
Ruby’s ride in the race, Seenya, returns from a long absence, but Walsh and Geraghty are head to head on forecast favourite and second favourite twice in the afternoon.
Ruby has both forecast favourites: Ceol Rua (12.35) and Are Ya Right Chief (2.05), head of the market in a big-field maiden hurdle over Barry’s Golanbrook.
It was thought that Miriam’s Dream, who had Tony Martin in front of the Stewards’ as to the merits of his February run, might challenge the front two: I would watch the 8.4 and see if it shrinks.
On bumper form, Golanbrook is ahead of Are Ya Right Chief and he also has the benefit of having already run over hurdles but he was given the livener of first-time blinkers at Fairyhouse and still managed to be beaten into second for the third time in a row.
Ceol Rua (Walsh) and Better Times (Geraghty) have both been overtaken in the betting by Irish Grand National winner, Organisedconfusion but he’s never won a hurdle.
I fancy Make A Track, who has already beaten Ceol Rua, and meets him on the same terms today.
