5-2 NAP AND 8-1 WINNER FOR DAQMAN: Daqman landed his Lingfield nap at 5-2 yesterday and went close with two outsiders there, one of them winning at 8-1. He opposes more favourites again today. Thursday’s returns:

WON 5-2 REINE DE VITESSSE (nap)
WON 8-1 RAPTURE
2ND 14-1 PITCHCOMBE (beaten a neck)

ARC COUNTDOWN: TAKE A RAIN CHECK: Yesterday Daqman looked at the possible effect of the draw on Sunday’s Arc de Triomphe. Today he checks out the ground conditions and relates them to the winning form of each runner.

IT’S GOING TO BE SOFT AT LONGCHAMP

SOFT with showers. That’s the going forecast for Longchamp today, where the Arc de Triomphe meeting launches tomorrow. Weather prospects for the weekend are good but the damage may have been done for those needing a sound surface, and the ground has to take Saturday racing first.

ALMANIA IS LAID OUT FOR A LISTED

2.35 Ascot (Noel Murless Stakes) Almania has won only his maiden, always a bad sign, but Sir Michael Stoute will have been putting all he knows into raising him to this Listed level for the sake of the stud book.

Sir Michael had been quiet for a while until, in the last week of September, he scored six winners in a spurt of 102110142211, using five different jockeys.

Other yards in the race have dropped off the leaderboard, and I’m thinking that maybe Hereby’s sequence will land in a bunker, now switched from handicaps after her 16lb rise since early August.

THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE AT 6.4..

2.40 Gowran Park Punters reflex action is to back Willie Mullins and Gordon Elliott wherever they see their names but they will have to take odds on about Abacadabras, with Gordon striking at a low point of 9%, his last four favourites all beaten.

It is admitted that Abacadabras has ‘attitude’ and how this will affect his hurdles debut here must be a worry.

Willie Mullins fits a hood on the disappointing six-year-old Golazo in a race that usually goes to five-year-olds.

Charles Byrnes gets his winners in bursts of form, like his current three from four, all three winners ridden by Kevin Brouder, two of them over hurdles. Poseidon at 6.4 in the BETDAQ orange was only 7-2 with most bookies this morning. It’s an adventurous bet but we have the value.

FONTWELL HAS A FALSE FAVOURITE

3.00 Fontwell With Gary Moore’s stable out of form, the favourite Botox Has may need the run on his English debut, but Ragnar (3.0 on BETDAQ as I write) won on the Flat for Roger Charlton on the good ground he will have today.

His new yard, that of Philip Hobbs, is flying with current returns of 222311312, still standing, and Ragnar was taking confident bets with the bookies this morning.

LAAFY ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK

3.45 Ascot (Gordon Carter Handicap) Altra Vita was a Sir Mark Prescott sequence horse last year – in fact, a filly related to a Champion Stakes winner – with six wins out of seven.

Sir Mark is hoping she’ll bounce back off the higher mark after wind surgery, while Michael Bell tries to extend the four-in-a-row sequence of Platform Nineteen, up 22lb since his first strike in July.

Ian Williams applies first-time visor to Darksideoftarnside, after his break since scoring over shorter at ffos Las. Landa Beach is unexposed but, like Horatio Star, is building up another kind of sequence: seconds.

Ryan Moore has seconditis on Laafy (222 from three rides) but Jim Crowley got him home in the mud at Nottingham in August.

This is the colt’s first try at 2m and soft ground gives Moore the chance to break his duck on the three-year-old, offered at 5.4 on BETDAQ this morning.

4.55 Ascot After Almania and Laafy for Ryan Moore, Jim Crowley gets the last leg of a Stoute treble bid today when he partners Mubakker but it’s a hard race.
