MIXING IT IN BOTH CODES

The weather has played havoc with Racing. Yesterday’s meeting at Towcester finished up being run virtually bottomless as ground deteriorated by the hour with heavy falls of snow.

As a result, Catterick has been lost but there are still some opportunities at Chepstow and also on the All Weather at Lingfield.

At 2.20 over jumps, Wyck Hill may be able to get his season off to a good start as he reverts back to Hurdling having been very useful over the larger obstacles. He won the Eider Chase 12 months and has a Chase rating of 141. At the weights he looks very well in but it is a concern that he never managed to win over Hurdles. In saying that, he is the standout entry in this race and is likely to take a lot of beating.

The following race is a competitive race over two miles and three furlongs. Strange Bird was travelling well last time out over three miles at Lingfield, but fell three out. She had won nicely in her previous run, again at Lingfield but over two and a half miles. Despite rising steadily in the weights, she still looks nicely handicapped for chasing and she can provide Leighton Aspell with another winner.

Later on in the card, the penultimate race at 4.05 looks another tight Handicap Chase with just six runners. Five out of the six could have a solid case made for them but for some slight reservations and Gunna Be A Devil appears to be the most solid option. He’s dropped just below his last Hurdles winning mark and with Matt Griffiths taking a further three pounds off, he seems to be the value bet in the race.

Over on the All Weather, the racing is not as appealing as it is in Chepstow. However, I have come up with two selections, including my Nap for the flat action.

The six furlong Handicap at 2.35 is a relatively weak contest and despite not winning for almost three years, The Wee Chief could take some catching. Luke Morris is a notable jockey booking for the 9 year old who has been some bits of good form and ran well on the All Weather in late 2013 when fourth over today’s course and trip. He now runs off a mark of 52 and that may just have allowed enough leeway for him to finally score again.

In the second last at 3.45, Jamie Spencer takes the mount on Michael Bell’s Le Rouquin who won last time out at Kempton in very impressive fashion. He bounded clear that day to a six length win and in today’s conditions, he looks like he will be very dangerous once again.
