HAT-TRICK OF WINNING BANKERS: After taking some early knocks, Daqman got back into profit narrowly yesterday with an informed double whammy in the Oaks trial plus a third consecutive winning banker with Yorkidding (WON 4-5). His treble included one 30-point stake at gold-banker level:

WON 8-13 Telescope (gold)
WON 8-13 Soapy Aitken
WON 4-5 Yorkidding

HAVING A BALL IN THE TRIAL: Daqman explained why Jellicle Ball (lay, 3rd 15-8) was a bad bet in the Height Of Fashion Stakes, and landed a big-race double whammy by tipping the gambled-on Lady of Dubai (WON 7-4), who staked a strong claim for the Oaks.

LAST ENGLISH DERBY TEST: The Cocked Hat Stakes today is the last trial for the Derby, unless something crops up at The Curragh this weekend. It’s still possible for Gleneagles, or another Irish Guineas runner, to be supplemented (deadline June 1).

WRITE YOURSELF A CZECH AT 14.5 ON BETDAQ

2.20 Goodwood Nelspruit would be the fourth favourite to oblige consecutively and would be Team Hannon’s hat-trick in the race if, as expected, he fronts the market at the off and wins on the back of his promising Newbury run.

2.50 Goodwood The Hannons are also going for a treble in this one but Dominate fails to live up to his name in the morning BETDAQ market.

Dominate has won only once in two years and that on heavy ground, whereas it is (said to be) drying out under a cloudy Sussex sky today.

It was also soft when locally-trained Czech It Out was beaten a short head in this race last year, but he broke his maiden on firm. A glass horse, sure to have been laid out for this by a stable among the winners.

Another lightly-raced sort, Zeshov, is a worry but this time a glass horse with very little form. Czech It Out was massive at 15.0 on BETDAQ early mouse.

3.25 Goodwood Punters got a touch of the Luna Moons this morning, making her a strong favourite, but the filly, who has stepped up from 6f to 7f, would be a very rare mile winner for her sprint sire, Equiano.

Also experimentally upped in trip is Royal Silk, who will be all right if he takes after his sire but his dam’s side is a line of sprinters.

Zoella needed a hood to score at Lingfield in February and hasn’t been seen since but there are good reports from trainer Charlie Appleby. She’s been given plenty of time.

Zoella looks at a disadvantage with top weight but we’re talking class 4 and she is probably miles better than that.

‘STARS’ CAN STORM INTO THE DERBY PICTURE

4.00 Goodwood (Cocked Hat Stakes) As the Predominate Stakes, this produced the fabulous Derby winner, Troy (1979), but has merely ruffled the market recently with one or two of the Gosden winners.

John’s record in the race since 2009 is 12112. He admits that his Mr Singh is not much better than a good handicapper and he’s just hoping for some black type. But second and third from his Newbury maiden have both won since.

Best of Times already has his black type but, on lines through Rocky Rider, his Listed win wasn’t much better than handicap class 2.

Prince Gargarin also races with a Listed penalty and could improve on his Dee Stakes third, but I think the Group-3 trial at Chester, the Vase, holds the key to this.

The winner that day, Hans Holbein, may turn out to be the Ballydoyle number one for the Epsom Derby, but the second colt home, Storm The Stars, related to Giants Causeway and Gleneagles on the dam’s side (no prizes for naming the sire), was not given a hard race. Medrano was third.

William Haggas’ yard has only just come to hand this year and Storm The Stars is expected to improve a good deal on what he’s done so far, with his rating already putting him virtually on a par with the penalized pair. I took 4.2 this morning.

JACK HAS MAJOR ROLE IN SPRINT HANDICAPS

4.35 Goodwood Endless Time gets in under the radar, light of the handicapper’s future penalty, and could be another Sea The Stars winner after ‘Storm’ in the Cocked Hat. One for your Daq Multiples.

5.10 Goodwood Ninjago and the quirky Ruwaiyan were second and fourth in the Stewards Cup here in August.
Zanetto could return to his old form after a good run back following a breathing op, and Major Jack from the family of Al Kazeem, just failed on his reappearance run at Ascot.

At four, Major Jack is the improver likely to foil the handicapper, and could take his place in the big sprint handicaps later on.
