NECK ON THE LINE AT 19.6: Daqman caught seconditis yesterday, just missing another killing when Reckless Endeavour (2nd 16-1 from 19.6) was beaten a neck at Galway, after four races up out of six each day on Friday and Saturday. His best-return Friday form was 111001; Saturday 101110; Sunday 2022.

BANKER IN MONDAY TREBLES: Daqman today lines up four for trebles across the Monday cards, with naps in England and Ireland, one of them a banker.

THE CHAMPIONS WERE BOTH LOSERS

A week is a long time in racing. And there are more fish to fry. But, going back before Goodwood and Galway, was I right to condemn the Weld-Johnston lemmings, punters who follow them blind as invincible champions at the two festival meetings?

In fact, Johnston ran 36 of his 66 Goodwood entries and won four races (11%) at 12-1, 8-1 (twice) and 11-4 for a loss of 1.75 points to single-unit stakes.

Weld had 35 starters at Galway for six winners (11-4, 15-8, 11-8, 5-4, 10-11, 2-5) – deficit 17.56 – and lost his Ballybrit leading-trainer title to Willie Mullins.

TWO STARS FOR A MONDAY NAPS DOUBLE

2.00 Kempton Sparring Queen looks something to bet on, if the form works out: 5.7 on BETDAQ this morning.

After beating Gladys Cooper at Wolverhampton, she was hampered on the final bend trying to catch Ventura Canyon at Lingfield.

An 8.0 offer, Betsalottie is the danger if she can reproduce her runaway win over Gladys Cooper at Lingfield in the Spring.

2.15 Ripon With Her Terms an absentee, Storm Cry looks the likely lass – around even money as I write – for Mark Johnston, after the filly’s improved performance at York.

3.05 Cork The banker today must be Simenon, sole runner at the two Irish meetings for Willie Mullins, whose current form is 110011111.

Mullins has had 19 of his last 26 races placed (that’s a 73% place strike rate).

Simenon has not been beaten over hurdles since December 2012, albeit just two runs, two wins. Main rival Bright New Dawn hasn’t won a hurdle race since 2013.

3.45 Ripon Just how much rain can we expect from the’ few showers’ forecast for Ripon this afternoon?

Not much would be needed for Eccleston, who is the best horse in this race (that’s why he’s top rated, so top weight): 2.9 offers.

Eccleston ran a stormer on the last day, after twice being hampered here at Ripon. The only runner in the race to have won a class 2.

6.15 Carlisle Down in the weights, down in grade, back to his winning trip and with the plum draw, Warfare will be hard to beat: 5.4 taken.

7.00 Windsor Bred in the purple, September Stars looks a cut above these. Has tried Listed level this term and went clear a week ago over CD.

Marginally under even money in the BETDAQ orange, and looks a worthwile double with Simenon. I’ll make Simenon the Irish banker; September Stars, the English nap.
