IS THE HENDERSON CROWN SLIPPING? The news that The New One will challenge My Tent Or Yours at Christmas prompts Daqman to analyse the fortunes of champion trainer, Nicky Henderson. Can he hold on to the title?

The New One is as tough as Hurricane Fly. Trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies must think so, as he surfs a wave of success which left the big two of Paul Nicholls and Nicky Henderson struggling in the spray at the weekend.

His super roller of December Gold Cup and International Hurdle double sent him past the half-million mark, and he has followed up with splash headlines: The New One will challenge My Tent Or Yours at Christmas.

Can he run the five-year-old again so quickly? The answer to that question may, ironically, lie with Hurricane Fly, the dual Champion Hurdle hero, and one of the horses he has to beat come March at Cheltenham.

Though it’s normal to see a once-a-month winter path to the big one, Fly flew home twice in the December – and, indeed, scored again in the January – on his way to his first championship in 2011.

If ‘Twiston’ won a Boxing Day showdown with Nicky Henderson’s My Tent Or Yours, another large chunk of the champion trainer’s potential Cheltenham earnings would be under threat.

Henderson has already seen an early duel severely knock his Gold Cup chances, when Cue Card slammed his titleholder, Bobs Worth, 40 lengths at Haydock.

In fact, traditionally, January is Henderson month but has he peaked early this season; is the pendulum now set to swing against him? Or is he only kidding, with bags more to come from what we’ve seen so far?

Tent must peg back the New One challenge or the big two Cheltenham golds could have been lost by the end of Boxing Day.

Where others may think that the wins of Oscar Whisky and Riverside Theatre were successful prep races, I believe that both were ‘got up’ for those early successes, with conditions in their favour.

On the form of his narrow Peterborough Chase, receiving weight from six of the seven runners, ‘Theatre’ can’t beat Captain Chris and Champion Court again, not at level weights.

And no way would I back Oscar Whisky to repeat his narrow novice-chase win over Wonderful Charm, also receiving a lump of weight, and with Charm not beaten up at the business end. That race puts Charm 6lb in front of Oscar in my book.

Nicholls’ Hinterland has already beaten the main Henderson Arkle hope, Grandouet, and Wonderful Charm is clear of any current Henderson runner in the RSA market.

Captain Conan was well stuffed by Sire De Grugy in the Tingle Creek, Chatterbox was beaten in the Gerry Feilden and the yard’s Supreme Novices’ Hurdle kingpin for the Festival, West Wizard, was turned over at Kempton at 6-1 on.

Much of the Henderson fortune in 2014 depends on the recovery of Sprinter Sacre. He must win at Christmas and continue his sequence through to the Champion Chase.

If there is something more seriously wrong with him than we are led to believe, and Sprinter Sacre is missing at Cheltenham, Simonsig would have to switch to the main event, leaving Nicky’s Ryanair bid in tatters.

Henderson is only third in the trainers’ table right now, trailing Nicholls and Jonjo O’Neill, with Philip Hobbs and David Pipe – both having great seasons – breathing down his neck.

Can you tell me one sure-fire winner on the big-money days from Boxing Day through to the end of the Festival from the Henderson Star Quality horses highlighted in his Racing Post stable tour on November 12? Here they are:

Captain Conan, Chatterbox, Bobs Worth, Grandouet, Long Run, My Tent Or Yours, Oscar Whisky, Riverside Theatre, Rolling Star, Simonsig, Sprinter Sacre and West Wizard.

A month ago you might have named at least four. Now it’s a struggle to pick one ‘certainty’, and it’s generally the case with the Cheltenham Festival markets.

They are currently showing a feature rare for the time of year now that the days of Quevega and Big Buck’s domination are over: there’s just a single odds-on favourite at this stage.
