Even when there are only two runners – it’s never easy 😉
Briar Hill, winner of the Cheltenham Bumper, was understandably very short in the Grade 1 Navan Novice Hurdle yesterday after the defection of two runners left a match.
He won in the end, but I wasn’t overly impressed with his workmanlike victory.
Sole challenger Azorian ran off wide at the bend heading into the back straight, losing several lengths in the process, and Briar Hill himself looked to lose concentration as the race finally developed on the home turn as Azorian drew alongside to challenge.
A couple of slaps down the neck got Briar Hill racing again and although he had to work much harder than his 1/4 backers would ideally have liked, he found enough in the finish to score by four and three-quarter lengths.
