DAQMAN’S 14.5 HUNT CUP WINNER: Daqman named first and second in both the 2,000 Guineas and the Thirsk Hunt Cup yesterday, his Thirsk bull’s-eye bet on Flight Plan at 14.5 on BETDAQ landing 50 points. His Hunt Cup one-two with Hi Royal (2nd 17-2) paid 76.68 for the forecast.
WON 8-1 FLIGHT PLAN (BETDAQ 14.5 taken Saturday)
WON 6-4 COSMIC YEAR (supernap, Friday)
WON 4-11 MAJBOROUGH (supernap, Thursday)
WON 2-1 MARINE NATIONALE (nap, Tuesday)
WON 6-5 SPIRIT OF ACKLAM (nap, Monday)
CLASSIC ROUT BY GODOLPHIN: Godolphin can land a fourth consecutive Classic in three days if Desert Flower takes the 1,000 Guineas for Charlie Appleby after Ruling Court’s 2,000 yesterday and a double at Churchill Downs: Good Cheer (Brad Cox) in the Kentucky Oaks Friday and Sovereignty (trained William Mott) in Saturday’s Kentucky Derby.
FLOWER FACING A RED FLAG
⭕ 3.35 Newmarket (1,000 Guineas): LAYS LOGIC favourites have won only 1-10.
A: 75% had won at least two races in their career.
B: 75% had won a Group race.
C: 85% rated 106 or higher.
D: A run in the last month (66%) is more important than in the 2,000 Guineas.
E: TRAINERS: Aidan O’Brien 5, Richard Hannon 2.
ABCD DUTY FIRST Twice a winner on good ground, third in the Rockfel (7f Newmarket, soft) but impressive winner of the Fred Darling trial at Newbury last month, slamming Hey Boo more than three lengths, with Simmering nearly 10 lengths 7th (‘unsuited by firm ground’, said trainer.)
ABCD SIMMERING Won the Princess Margaret (6f good to firm) at Ascot after second in the Albany (6f GF); then took the Calvados at Deauville (7f, soft) last summer. See Duty First and Lake Victoria.
ABCE LAKE VICTORIA Five in a row (Group-1 autumn hat-trick), beating Simmering and Red Letter in the Moyglare (7f good), winning the Cheveley Park here (6f soft) and making £409k in the Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies (12f firm). Exposed and lacks stable confidence.
ABC DESERT FLOWER Four in a row, including the May Hill (1m good), culminating in the Fillies Mile – went clear – with three Aidan O’Brien fillies beaten 5.5, half a length and eight lengths.
AD HEY BOO Jack Channon thinks his Fred Darling runner-up will improve for the extra furlong. See Duty First.
C RED LETTER Ger Lyons’ daughter of Frankel got within a head of Lake Victoria in their maiden last June before running a length-and–a-half fourth to the same filly in the Moyglare after being short of room. See Simmering.
D REMAAT You wouldn’t usually look at a Kodiac filly for this but Remaat ran on well when third in the Nell Gwyn (7f) here last month and Andrew Balding’s yard needs two for the 50 up this year.
– CHANTILLY LACE broke her maiden on heavy at Salisbury for a Classic-winning yard that does particularly well with fillies.
– ELWATEEN broke her maiden on AW for Saeed bin Suroor, who won this with Mawj in 2023.
– FLIGHT 3rd in the Oh So Sharp Stakes here in October. Doesn’t tick the boxes but has improved at home and gets on well with Oisin Murphy, who won the 1,000 on unfancied Mawj (2023).
DAQMAN says Aidan O’Brien has made a slow start to the season and Expanded was easy to back and ran poorly yesterday.
Ger Lyon had seven out of eight placed in three days in late April and Juddmonte could make up for the Field Of Gold disappointment with Red Letter.
Twice close up to Lake Victoria, she is unexposed, with jockey Colin Keane one of the most reliable in the game.
Flight, Remaat and Chantilly Lace may also run above their offers but, with his team in Classic winning form yesterday, Desert Flower will be hard to beat, William Buick riding so intelligently.
Betdaq Betting Exchange 2.7 Desert Flower, 9.9 Red Letter, 29 Chantilly Lace, 54 Flight, 128 Remaat (7.8 place).
GET ON THE GOSDEN GAZELLE
⭕ 1.45 Newmarket (Pretty Polly Stakes): LAYS LOGIC: The favourite has been beaten five years in a row and, though Falakeyah impressed on AW at Wolverhampton, this is Team Gosden’s race.
They’ve won it eight times since 2009, and the hat-trick after victories in 2023-4 would ease a bit of the pain from Field Of Gold’s half-length run too late in yesterday’s 2,000.
Their runner, Sand Gazelle, is a Frankel out of a Kingman mare, half-sister to Arc winner Bluestocking. BETDAQ 7.6.
⭕ 2.20 Newmarket (Dahlia Stakes): Running Lion, Team Gosden’s 2023 winner of the Pretty Polly, tries to be the grey they will remember from this meeting.
The lady Lion is locked 114-114 with Cinderella’s Dream, close second over a similar trip at Meydan recently but rated ahead of Elmalka, surprise 1,000 winner on this card last year.
BECKETT STAR ‘BIG’ AT 10.0
⭕ 2.55 Newmarket Ebor runner-up Kihavah is already in winning form (Wild Waves and Align The Stars well behind at Musselburgh) but that hikes the eight-year-old over the 10st mark here.
Artistic Star has always looked a 1m 6f animal and Ralph Beckett finally gives him his chance after a run back at Kempton. BETDAQ 10.0
Of the lightweights, Liam Swagger mixes Flat and hurdles and is still in the Chester Cup. Blindedbythelights, a once-useful handicapper, is on the way back.
