LAZZAT LAST-DAY DAQMAN WINNER: Another big-odds near miss yesterday at Royal Ascot with Holkham Bay (4th 28-1) after 49.0, 40.0 and 20.0 were beaten a total of less than three lengths earlier in the week. Lazzat (WON 9-2) was a finale winner.
TODAY: Royal Ascot wrap
TOMORROW: Fortune Cookies
TODAY’S BETS: Three selections from Pontefract and Ffos Las including a WIN 20 bet.
GOSDENS WEAR THE TOPPERS
🎩 Royal Ascot 2025 LEADING TRAINERS: John and Thady Gosden (5 wins) £1,754,165, Aidan O’Brien (5 wins) £1,005,985, Harry Eustace (2 wins) £893,963. TOP JOCKEY: Ryan Moore 7, Oisin Murphy 5, James Doyle 4.
CHAMPION RACEHORSE: Field Of Gold A stunning St James’s Palace winner on the back of his Irish 2,000 Guineas. Don’t back him for the Eclipse; it will be the Sussex Stakes at the earliest before we see him again. What about next year’s stars in waiting?
Gstaad He’s a big horse with plenty of scope but his pedigree and his monthly entries at the Curragh for the rest of the summer (Railway Stakes, Phoenix etc) suggest that you should not buy into him for a Classic next year but spend on him this year.
I am reminded of his half-brother Vandeek: form 1111 at two, winner of the Morny and the Middle Park, but beaten in two sprints, his only races, as a three-year-old.
And you have this early-warning klaxon from Aidan O‘Brien: ‘We’ve got one better than Gstaad at home.’
True Love Gstaad had beaten True Love in a maiden before his Coventry triumph and that made True Love a nap in the Queen Mary. She didn’t let us down, and the Morny is an ideal next target.
Lazzat Expect a winner-takes-all sprint match somewhere down the line between yesterday’s Queen Elizabeth winner, Lazzat, and Ka Ying Rising, who had yesterday’s runner-up, Satono Reve, well beaten off at Sha Tin in April.
TOMORROW: Fortune Cookies: where do Zarigana and Map Of Stars fit in now?
STAR TO SHINE
⭕ 3.40 Pontefract (Castle Fillies Stakes Listed) Desperately small field sizes at Ponty this afternoon with three runners in each of the first three races and the going is good ???. Anyone want six days at Royal Ascot ?? !!
The blushes are spared slightly in that from a betting perspective on Betdaq Betting Exchange the opening trio of races are reasonably competitive – especially the 2.40 where it was virtually co-favourites of three in mid morning trading!
I’ll save my only bet on the card for this Listed contest over a mile and a half where William Haggas’s Santorini Star can complete her hat-trick.
The Newmarket trainer was hardly full of the joys of Spring when interviewed by Matt Chapman on ITV Racing yesterday ahead of the Wokingham and he might have been in a worse mood later having seen his favourite come from well behind to finish second after Tom Marquand suffered problems with his whip getting tangled in the reins in the closing stages.
Hopefully it will be a little more straightforward for the duo here as Santorini Star looks ready for a crack at this level having won well at Goodwood in a class 3 last time out.
She still has a couple of pounds to find with top rated Karmology on the figures with this one stepping up again in trip.
DIAMOND TO SPARKLE
⭕ 4.15 Pontefract The stayers are out for this 2m 2f handicap and at a decent price I’ll take a chance with the only previous course and distance winner Diamond De Vindecy.
He stormed home here in April (going also good) winning by nine and a half lengths and a follow-up is definitely on the cards – despite now being 8lb higher in the weights.
The downside for us is that he needs to bounce back from a disappointing effort at Haydock last time out with connections unable to offer anything substantial in terms of an explanation. It just looked a bad day at the office to me with possibly the ground on the quick side.
THREE YORKSHIREMEN IN WALES
⭕ 5.15 Ffos Las Three Yorkshiremen has been running well on the all-weather and returns to the turf off what I feel could be a very lenient mark.
His last turf race on the flat came last April when he ran a respectable fifth at Bath off a mark of 70. Incredibly he now races off 60 here despite his recent consistency. A WIN 20 project for me on Betdaq.
