Chester Lesson 1: Aidan O’Brien is back and no more excuses for the squad on the grounds of fitness.
Colt (Lambourn) and filly (Minnie Hauk) both had to work hard to win their trials in the Cheshire Oaks and Chester Vase.
Next stops: Lingfield, Saturday, with Giselle in the Oaks Trial, Puppet Master and Acapulco Bay in the Derby Trial. Next week: the Dante and the Musidora at York.
Chester Lesson 2: The first two sprints went to the low draw again with the results by stall: 1 beat 2 in the Lily Agnes and 2 beat 6 in the 5f handicap.
But then Tom Eaves took the 6f handicap by the scruff of the neck and ran away under Hammer The Hammer (out of gate 10) beating Diligently from the one stall more than four lengths.
KNIGHT CAN TOPPLE PAWNS

Fair Taxes (drawn 1 today) had to race wide out of 12 when third, giving weight to the first two, over the Chester CD in August.
Rosenpur (2) is 0-10 on turf but Copper Knight (3) has won at this May meeting and the June Chester meeting (twice), well handicapped for his 104th appearance! BETDAQ 8.3.
You can expect Angel Shared (4) to lead today and I had marked down Roman Dragon (5) in my notebook for 6f at the June meeting here.
He’s 11141212 over that trip here but has never won anywhere over today’s 5f. Can Oisin Murphy make the difference today? You could get 7.3 on Betdaq Betting Exchange this morning.
ABC DEE OF MOORE MOUNT
⭕ 2.35 Chester (Dee Stakes) Aidan O’Brien has won six of the last seven of these, all ridden by Ryan Moore, who today opts for Mount Kilimanjaro over Isambard Brunel.
The Siyouni colt was just over a length behind stablemate Twain in the Saint-Cloud International in October after running third to Field Of Gold in July. Has had a run back.
ILLINOIS ORMONDE CLASS
⭕ 3.05 Chester (Ormonde Stakes) Versatile or what? It’s Absurde! Ebor winner, County Hurdle winner and third. Good ground, heavy and firm.. all seem to come alike to Willie Mullins seven-year-old.
Today he gives the poor penniless English a treat: Mullins versus O’Brien means one of them must lose!
O’Brien has won it three times in the last six seasons but with year-older horses not a four-year-old (one last won it in 2013).
That won’t bar my supernap: Group-2 winner twice, Leger runner-up Illinois has never been out of the frame, has a touch of class and is also versatile as to ground. This is his best trip and it’s Group 3.
Mullins has paid for the trip but only once from the winner’s enclosure with his last six Chester runners: 424312. Have a nice day!
BOX BACK IN HOLIDAY MOOD
⭕ 4.10 Chester Box To Box won twice here in 2023 and is back to a similar mark in English handicaps for the first time since, after five months in Bahrain.
He had the same Bahrain holiday in 2023-24 and, on his return last May rated 94, was beaten a nose at this Chester meeting. A grade lower today off 86, and 6.5 taken.
Fouroneohfever landed back-to-back strikes here at Chester as part of a hat-trick last Spring. Stays further.
