WON 4-5 INFRAAD Flat supernap

3rd 12-1 VINCENT ROCKS Bull’s-eye bet
WON 5-6 GAELIC WARRIOR NH supernap

GSTAAD THE O’BRIEN PICK: Gstaad, rather than Puerto Rico, is likely to be the Aidan O’Brien runner in Saturday’s 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket. See: O’Brien’s Downhill Guineas. The three-day Newmarket meeting opens tomorrow

O’BRIEN’S DOWNHILL GUINEAS

Slippery slope. Gstaad, the luxury Alps village, is ‘a resting place for travellers’ but you need very deep pockets at this ‘winter wonderland’ ski resort.

For Aidan O’Brien the 2,000 Guineas has been a resting place for favourites, a disappointing downhill piste-take in recent years, punters pockets left with the linings hung out.

O’Brien hasn’t won the Newmarket Classic since 2019, with THIRTEEN 2,000 Guineas runners – three of them favourite- all beaten in the last six seasons.

His nearest finishers: Wichita 2nd 15-2 (2020, four losers), Battleground 9-2 fav 13th of 14 (2021, three losers), Luxembourg 3rd 9-2 (2022 two losers), Auguste Rodin 13-8 fav 12th of 14 (two losers) and one in each in the last two years with City Of Troy 6-4 on fav and Expanded 5-1 9th of 11.

Gstaad, supplemented by O’Brien for the first Classic on Saturday, has to uphold Dewhurst form in the manner of King’s Best, Haafhd and Poetic Flare, all beaten into a place in that race this century.

Gstaad, who had won the Coventry, was runner-up in October’s Dewhurst before winning a sub-standard Breeders Cup (large field of Listed and Group 3 at best).

NOT SHY ABOUT EGOTISTICAL

⭕ 3.23 Redcar This looks to be a match between Egotistical and Southwell first time out winner Confide In Me.

It’s never easy for winners to give away 7lb in novice company and the filly Confide In Me may struggle, given that she now has to improve but has yet to race on the turf.

Furthermore, the form of her Southwell win was let down subsequently when the runner-up Korbut disappointed at Wolverhampton.

Egotistical looks the percentage call given her trainer Roger Varian has hit form (6 winners from last 22) and this is his only runner on the card.

Egotistical ran well on turf debut at Nottingham when third.

TEA FOR TWO

⭕ 6.05 Punchestown (Champion Stayers Hurdle Grade 1) The second of two Grade 1’s on today’s card – the first (novice chase) at 5.25 should see the prohibitively priced Kopek Des Bordes go one better than his Arkle second to stablemate Kargese last month.

This Stayers Hurdle looks a lot more competitive on the Betdaq Betting Exchange market. The Robcour colours have a strong claim on the race with Teahupoo seeking a third win in this race and Bob Olinger who is retaining his form well despite his 11 years of age and finished in front of Teahupoo in the Stayers’ Hurdle at Cheltenham.

Teahupoo’s home form however is much stronger and it’s interesting to see trainer Gordon Elliott fit blinkers for the first time – presumably after his Cheltenham below par performance.

It’s hard not to include him but I’ll also add the relative youngster Honesty Policy – stablemate to Teahupoo – who is starting to prove himself in his own right in the staying division.

His Aintree third to Home By The Lee at Aintree last time out is solid form and Harry Cobden will be keen to impress his new boss JP.

JIMMY A GIMME

⭕ 7.00 Southwell Silvestre De Sousa aka SDS has made a terrific return to the UK with eight winners in the last fortnight including 50/1 surprise Izzy Fast on Tuesday this week.

He teams up here with Jimmy Speaking who pulled clear of what looked a competitive field at Doncaster last month and the 4lb hike shouldn’t halt his progress in this race which is full of exposed sorts including Commander Of Life whose form figures this season read 4224243.
