GAILLARD’S THE STYLISH GUY

⭕ 1.20 Cheltenham (Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle)

REPRISE: See Festival stats (Daqman Archive: Wednesday, March 10)

RATINGS: Gaillard Du Mesnil 151, Bob Olinger 150, Bravemansgame 150

TRAINER: Gaillard Du Mesnil

FORM: The Irish dominate (six of the last seven winners) but Bravemansgame joined the 150-plus party with an impressive victory in a winners’ race for the Challow Hurdle.

Bear Ghylls’ bid is more ambitious, with his hat-trick coming in lesser races but he is bred for the trip.

Gaillard Du Mesnil is rated only a couple of pounds behind stablemate Appreciate It, yesterday’s runaway winner of the Supreme Novices Hurdle.

It may be significant that Blue Lord was six lengths down when he fell at the last in the Supreme. That matches the form of Appreciate It’s Pharma Hurdle (Deloitte) win which followed Bob Olinger’s defeat of Blue Lord by the same margin.

It’s clearly a close-run thing here between Bob Olinger and Gaillaird Du Mesnil. In line with the ratings, I just prefer Gaillard on maturity at this stage; jumps stylishly.

🟪 SELECTION: Gaillard Du Mesnil (BETDAQ 3.15)

HOOK MONKFISH? IMPOSSIBLE

⭕ 1.55 Cheltenham (Brown Advisory Novices Chase, ex-RSA)

REPRISE: See Festival stats (Daqman Archive: Wednesday, March 10)

RATINGS: Monkfish 164, Sporting John 153, Eklat De Rire 151.

TRAINER: Dickie Diver

FORM: Nicky Henderson has taken this with Bobs Worth, Might Bite and Champ so, though 22lb behind Monkfish in the chase ratings, Dickie Diver had a touch of class over hurdles and cannot be ignored, though unusual to win any chase at

Cheltenham any day after just one run over fences; against Monkfish, surely impossible.

Monkfish won the 2020 Albert Bartlett, a race in which Dickie Diver was fourth the year before. Monkfish has since won three chases in a row, forceful and accomplished as any Cheltenham champion we’ve seen.

Escaria Ten, third to Galvin yesterday, didn’t really boost his Naas conqueror, Eklat De Rire.

Sporting John won the Scilly Isles at Sandown from Shan Blue who had already beaten talking-horse The Big Breakaway in the Kauto Star at Kempton.

🟪 SELECTION: Monkfish

OUTSIDER: Dickie Diver (BETDAQ 30.0)

BIRCHDALE A ‘HIDDEN HORSE’

⭕ 2.30 Cheltenham (Coral Cup)

REPRISE: See Festival stats (Daqman Archive: Wednesday, March 10)

TRAINER: Craigneiche, Monte Cristo, Birchdale, Janika for Nicky Henderson and Grand Roi (Denise Foster) for Gordon Elliott.

FORM: Monte Cristo looked the part for this race when scoring comfortably over the trip at Kempton on Boxing Day; raised 12lb but was weak last term and going frøm strength to strength now. Stablemate Craigneiche is also up 12lb for winning at Ascot on his return.

Hidden horse Birchdale (8th last year on soft) would come into it on today’s drying ground. ‘Always very talented’ the compliment from his trainer.

Guard Your Dreams, his jumping made sharper over 2m (late on the scene in the big hurdle at Newbury), can now add stamina to his speed. He’s well bred for this.

Similarly, Grand Roi should continue to shine stepped up in trip, though that vital few pounds higher in the handicap.

Hampered when a horse fell in front of her, Dysart Diamond was three from four at that stage.

🟪 SELECTION: Guard Your Dreams (BETDAQ 9.8)

BETDAQ VALUE: Monte Cristo 15.0, Birchdale 19.0

LAST CHANCE POUR CHACUN..

⭕ 3.05 Cheltenham (Champion Chase)

REPRISE: See Festival stats (Daqman Archive: Wednesday, March 10)

RATINGS: Chacun Pour Soi 173, Politologue 168, First Flow 166, Cilaos Emery, and Nube Negra 165.

TRAINERS: Greaneteen, Politologue

FORM: Has Chacun Pour Soi missed the boat twice? When he dropped out last year with a minor problem, Politologue – beaten twice before in the race – was handed his chance to dominate a depleted field. Chacun is in great form this time around but faces new kids on the block.

He jumps superbly and won the Ladbrokes Dublin Chase 15 lengths in front of Notebook who had been within six lengths of him at the end of last year. The 2020 Arkle winner, Put The Kettle On, was only third.

Politologue, who defends his title, beat stablemate Greaneteen seven lengths in the Tingle Creek but was himself beaten seven lengths by First Flow in the Clarence House at Ascot.

Meanwhile, they tried to ignore the waning powers of 2018 and 2019 winner of this, Altior, by making him evens favourite for the Ladbrokes Desert Orchid Chase at the King George meeting at Kempton.

Nube Negra cruised past him like a class act, with Rouge Vif last of four finishers; Sceau Royal fell.

So the ‘new kids’ standing in the way of Chacun Pour Soi are Free Flow and Nube Negra

🟪 SELECTION: Chacun Pour Soi

BETDAQ VALUE: Nube Negra (13.0) and First Flow 17.0 on BETDAQ BETTING EXCHANGE

EASYSLAND CAN BOUNCE BACK

⭕ 3.40 Cheltenham (Cross-Country)

REPRISE: See Festival stats (Daqman Archive: Wednesday, March 10)

RATINGS: Easysland 167, Tiger Roll 166; Alpha Des Obeaux, Balko Des Flos 152

TRAINERS: Alpha Des Obeaux, Out Sam, Tiger Roll (all three saddled by Denise Foster for Gordon Elliott), Easysland.

FORM Horses aged 11+ have failed in 11 years out of 12, and Tiger Roll (2018-19) lost this – only second at 11-8 on favourite – before the shutdown spoiled his chance of a Grand National hat-trick.

Easysland won it last year to make it seven wins in a row on his CV. Well beaten behind Kingswell Theatre in the autumn version of this (fourth 11-8 on favourite), but he was giving 22lb to each of the first two and, still only seven, should bounce back.

The December cross-country here at Cheltenham was a handsome win for Some Neck. Given a recent run over hurdles.

Alpha Des Obeaux, Hogan’s Height and Le Breuil have jumped the National fences and may adapt to these banks.

In the last nine years this race has produced winner (twice), second and third in the Grand National, including Tiger Roll, who has sadly lost his spirit.

Third in the Grand Sefton and the Warwick Classic, Le Breuil had a holiday and looks the type to have his interest revived, and his stamina used to the full, by cross-countrys.

🟪 SELECTION: Easysland

BETDAQ VALUE: Some Neck 13.0, Le Breuil 18.0

LAYS LOGIC: Tiger Roll

DUC TAKES BIG DROP IN CLASS

⭕ 4.15 Cheltenham, (Grand Annual Challenge Cup)

REPRISE: See Festival stats (Daqman Archive: Wednesday, March 10)

TRAINER: Ashutor, Duc Des Genievres

LAYS LOGIC: Apart from a winner at Limerick, Joseph O’Brien’s team is running shocking, with five flops wrapped around that solitary success beaten a total of 219 lengths.

They called the vet to Busselton after the Fred Winter yesterday! And they called for the smelling salts for Kevin Blake.

Will Blake-O’Brien get the last laugh with last year’s County Hurdle third Embittered? No success in eight starts since taking his hurdles maiden, always a bad sign. The BETDAQ 6.0 looks low.

Two favourites have won in this in the decade but most winners have been enormous prices: 66-1, 40-1, 28-1, 20-1.

FORM: You can make a case for half the field but class could tell with Duc Des Genievres making his handicap debut after Graded races behind Chacun Pour Soi, First Flow, Nube Negra and Put The Kettle On, who could all be in the money in championship events today.

🟪 SELECTION: Duc Des Genievres

BETDAQ VALUE: Duc Des Genievres 30.0

LAYS LOGIC: Embittered

12.0 BETDAQ EARNS ITS STRIPE

⭕ 4.50 Cheltenham (Champion Bumper)

REPRISE: See Festival stats (Daqman Archive: Wednesday, March 10)

RATINGS: Kilcruit 139, Sir Gerhard 132, Ramillies 127.

TRAINERS: Cool Jet, Gangee, Kilcruit, Ramillies and Sir Gerhard all run for Willie Mullins; Chemical Energy and Three Stripe Life for Gordon Elliott (in the name of Denise Foster)

FORM: Ten of these were winners on the last day, which is where the champion always comes from (famous last words). Five-year-olds are 7-3 over those aged six.

Letsbeclearaboutit, four and a half lengths runner-up to Sir Gerhard, was outrun 12 lengths by Kilcruit in a Listed. Three Stripe Life is bred for stamina and was backed significantly during the week.

LAYS LOGIC: Unless there’s an Envoi Allen (2019) about, you can normally lay the favourite. But Kilcruit is Paul Townend’s pick of a magic Mullins quintet.

🟪 SELECTION: Kilcruit

BETDAQ VALUE: Three Stripe Life 12.0
