LA LIGA Match Preview:
Malaga v FC Barcelona
Sunday 20.00 Live on Sky Sports.

And the winner is….
Spain’s La Liga dominated at last week’s FIFA awards in Zurich and it was no surprise to see Lionel Messi, the Argentinean and Barcelona wizard, walk away with a fourth consecutive Ballon D’or awarded to him in recognition of his current status as being the greatest footballer on the planet. The award for the 2012 FIFA World’s best XI consisted solely of players from La Liga although only one player from outside the big two, Real Madrid & Barcelona, was successfully voted in and I am certain that not many would dispute Atletico’s Radamel Falcao a starting place on that tantalizing dream team.

Feet Up….
After all the glitz and glamour of Zurich Senor Messi must now hang up his polka dot suit for another year and get back to the day job with his beloved Barcelona. Last Thursday saw stand in coach Jordi Roura achieved what is one of the most difficult tasks in world football and that was to persuade Messi to take a rare day off. Barca hosted Cordoba in a Copa del Rey tie and as expected brushed aside their lower division opponents five nil on the night. This victory rewarded the current Copa Del Rey holders with a place in the quarter finals and a two legged tie against the blues and whites of Malaga. These teams will now have to meet three times in the next ten days and it is in the sunny south where valuable La Liga points are up for grabs in the first part of this trilogy.

Ups and downs….
Malaga have had a most fascinating season. First in their Champion’s league group and drawn in a very winnable last sixteen tie with FC Porto. Currently fourth in La Liga. Banned by UEFA from next year’s Champion’s League (even if they win this year’s one!) for unpaid bills which could extend to a maximum ban of four years. Consistent yet unconfirmed report of players wages being delayed and rumours that some of Europe’s top clubs are looking to tempt their best player ‘Isco’ away from La Rosaleda. Coach Manuel Pellegrini has done an incredible job however the recent winter break was unkind to his team and signs of weakness are beginning to show in his small squad. Last week Malaga travelled north to bogey team Deportivo and were lucky to get out of there with only a one nil defeat. Deportivo had won only two of their seventeen La Liga games however on the night made Malaga look like a Sunday morning pub team.

Octopussy….
The only team in la Liga that FC Barcelona have failed to take maximum points from was Real Madrid (2-2) and the Catalans have won all nine of their away games scoring an incredible thirty two goals on their journeys. Lionel Messi will return after his mid-week break and will be his usual constant threat and Anchovie’s cat Willy Caballero will have played an exceptional game if he can prevent his net from bulging in the ninety minutes . The hosts last home game was a very entertaining three two victory over an out of sorts Real Madrid but they have been defeated here by both Sociedad and Rayo Vallecano. Malaga are decent and consistent yet are prone, as a team, to lapses of concentration mid match where they generally tend to pay the price. The highly over rated Malaga right winger, Joaquin Sanchez, put in yet another inconsistent display against Deportivo last week and if his team mates and he put in a similarly lethargic effort against FC Barcelona well then even Paul the octopus could predict the result of this game from his ‘Davy Jones Locker’.
