He now previews Seville v Atletico Madrid …..

La Liga, Week One
Seville v Atletico Madrid
KO 22:00, Sunday SKY

Where’s everyone gone….?
One Leagues loss is another leagues gain is certainly a mantra that holds up after this summer’s exodus of top class players from Spain’s Primera division. Over thirty first team players have departed to pastures a new as their debt ridden La Liga clubs have been forced to sell to football clubs recently bought by mega-rich Russians, Americans and Sheikhs. England’s premier league and France’s ligue 1 have been the prime benefactors of such wealthy backings. The way things are going I predict that in two years time when some Russian oligarch we have never heard of buys an Irish football club we will witness a press conference in a Dublin hotel with Lionel Messi & Neymar both stating “as kids, playing football in the shanty towns of south America, we always dreamed that one day we would play for…. Shamrock Rovers”.

The Old & the new….
While the three ‘O’s, Falcao, Soldado and Negredo, will no doubt be successes at their new clubs some will struggle and particularly for me former Seville wide boy Jesus Navas. In a world cup year and competing with an array of stars at mega-rich Manchester City is a pressure that could unfortunately trigger the anxiety and homesickness that this twenty seven year old has suffered from in the past, but lets hope not.
All is not lost in La Liga, the wonderfully talented, selfish and shy (joke!) Neymar has come to town and the talk of will the Messi/Neymar partnership work on the pitch is pointless, of course it will! Football is a simple game and mostly played on instinct so when these two geniuses gel together then entertainment will follow. Yes Neymar is selfish but Messi has had the experience of playing with a more selfish (but less talented!)player than even Neymar….Alexis Sanchez!

The rest….
At other clubs their is also reasons to be positive, Isco has stayed in La Liga but now playing in the white of Real Madrid. The Gareth Bale saga still drags on however he will obviously have a major impact on which ever club he is playing for come midnight on the first of September 2013. David Villa gets the chance to see out his final years as a first team striker at Atletico Madrid and at only €5.1 million could be the bargain buy of the season. Atletico have also managed to hold onto possibly the world’s best goalkeeper in Belgian Thibaut Courtois and may be the ‘dark horses’ of this season’s Champion’s League. Seville, under the guidance, yet again, of fidgety coach Unai Emery have brought in some top class players particularly strikers Carlos Bacca, ex-PSG front man Kevin Gameiro and Romanian Raul Andrei.

King Kon!….
Game week one of the La Liga 2012-13 season kicks off this weekend and it is with the last mentioned team for which I am placing faith in to get us off to a winning wager! Twenty year old midfielder Geoffery Kondogobia has been one of the many transfer ‘rumours’ this past summer but luckily for Emery & Seville that he has opted to stay. The Frenchman will be a key player in Seville’s season and to start he should be able to run the show this Saturday when Atletico Madrid visit the Sanchez Pizjuan stadium. Kondogbia is well known to be a “laid back” character and like most other twenty year old males is known to have as much interest in scoring off the pitch as on it but if Emery can keep him happy then all augurs well for Sevilles season ahead.

Savvy Seville….
There was a 26 point gap between these two clubs in the Madrilenians favour last season but there is no way this will be anywhere near repeated this season. Atletico may have the best keeper & bargain buy transfer in David Villa but as last season showed that without Falcao they can become quite static. Diego Costa had a decent partnership with Falcao but David Villa will take a while to connect with the moody Brazilian. I expect more of the same as last season from Atletico, hard to score against and quick on the break and why not, if it’s not broken don’t fix it! However, in the context of this match I feel Atletico may be in very a very tough night. Seville have bought well and the new players have had a very positive pre-season winning away by three goals to one to both FC Barcelona and Manchester United. They also have the benefit of a victorious Europa League two game tie under their belt and those games will definitely have instilled an edge in team fitness and familiarity over their game week one opponents.
