🇺🇸 MATCH POINT: Our tennis tipping column is 21 points up since it started. The next recommended bet comes on Tuesday in the US Open – Marin Cilic v Denis Kudla.
In this strangest of years, I’m holding off getting involved in the US Open outright markets for a couple of rounds at least.
Some players will cope better than others with the enforced regulations which notably means no crowds, rigorous testing procedures and even making the island of Manhattan off limits for the players.
But the show goes on and as tennis fans we have to be grateful for that.
The revised tournament protocol didn’t seem to phase the progress of World Number One Novak Djokovic who cruised to a 6-1, 6-4, 6-1 first round defeat of Damir Dzumhur. Djokovic is now unbeaten in 24 matches this season and will face Kyle Edmund in round two.
The first round matches continue today and although short in the market it would be a huge shock if Marin Cilic doesn’t prove strong enough for Denis Kudla.
Although no where near his peak, and indeed he’s a former US Open Champion in 2014 – Cilic comes into this event ranked 38. He hardly had the best prep for this with a woeful first-round defeat at the Western & Southern Open where he was beaten in straight sets by Denis Shapovalov.
However, surely you would expect Cilic to have enough class to raise his game to beat Kudla who is coming in to this in-form but has been gaining most of his wins on the challenger circuit and this is a huge step up in class.
The respective ATP rankings of 38 v 111 favour Cilic and the two players have only met once previously – that came at Wimbledon in 2015 with Cilic winning in four sets.
Cilic to win in straight sets or 3-1 can be backed at 2.5 and 3.8 respectively on the BETDAQ Sportsbook and that represents a better value option than the match betting.
