SHAMROCK AT ROSCOMMON: SHAMROCK starts the punting week by looking at the Grade 3 Kilbegnet Novice Chase and reflects on the big race action from the Curragh on Sunday.

The nap, Anamba, finished second yesterday at 3/1 having traded very short in running on BETDAQ for the C.L. & M.F. Weld Park Stakes. She was beaten by Coolmore who turned their Leopardstown form around. Anamba had beaten Coolmore on her debut. Who would be a racing tipster 🙁

Winning trainer Aidan O’Brien said after the race: “I’m delighted with that. I thought she would win in Leopardstown, but it was on the inside track and she was a bit green and the ground was a bit dead. I always thought she wanted to go a mile and she ran today to get more experience. She is crying out to go a mile this year. They went a good gallop and she came home well.”

O’Brien also won the other feature race on the card, the Juddmonte Beresford Stakes, but not as the market suggested he might.

The winner Port Douglas went off at 14/1 and the assumption had to be that he was the pacemaker when sent to the front by Emmet McNamara. He was passed by the market leader True Solitaire but rallied gamely to get back up and win. The victory broke Vincent O’Brien’s record of 14 Beresford wins for the trainer who said after the race: “He’s a tough horse and was a bit lazy last time so we put the blinkers on to keep him awake. He could go for the Racing Post Trophy and is a typical middle-distance horse. They went a good gallop.”

There’s a mixed card at Roscommon to start the week and a Grade 3 treat at 4.15.

Just four runners go to post for the Kilbegnet Novice Chase but it could develop into a tasty head to head match between Galway winner Sizing Platinum and The Game Changer who was second to Rock The World in the Ballybrit Novice Chase, also at Galway. A line through Rock The World suggests there will be little between the pair but I think the BETDAQ market has it right with Sizing Platinum who receives 3lb from The Game Changer.
