THREE EACH-WAY BETS UP OUT OF FOUR: Shamrock yesterday landed his third each-way bet from four with Kateal (WON 5-2) but, like Gunna Be A Devil (WON 11-4) on Tuesday, it was subject to an on-course gamble. His other winner was Allthekingshorses (WON 13-2). The moral is: get on early Betdaq offers!

How many more of these do we get? In England and Ireland alike, small-field conditions races for big prizes are exhausting racing’s exchequers. And they are very hard on punters.

You only have to look at the races in which Captain Chris and Menorah tipped up. Now here we are with a five-horse Listed at Thurles (1.55). I’ll have to nap in it but it’s certainly a day for trying to find some more each-way bets.

First of all, I can’t be on a Willie Mullins (Cooldine) at the moment: our greatest trainer is missing strike badly, with nine placed from 15 but only one winner.

Cooldine hasn’t won since the 2009 RSA. He’ll probably bounce back this season, but I wouldn’t choose today to bet on it. Clan Tara’s is a similar story.

Joncol seems in the doldrums but you have to remember that his winless season between November and February was mostly in the highest Grade.

It would be a one-in-10 occurrence for a 10-year-old to win this race, if the stats work out again; in any case, Pyscho has never won this far.

Psycho and Roberto Goldback are the most recent winners in the race, the only two runners to have scored in 2011 and ‘Roberto’ must be the pick of the pair

He has won a four-runner Listed like this one, when trying 3m for the first time, and he should have won Guinness Gold Cup at Punchestown but for a final-fence error.

At that same Punchestown Festival, we saw Golanbrook (3.25) win a hot bumper and the booking of Paul Townend suggests that Thomas Foley means business with him today, despite the presence of Mount Benbulben.

Grey Soldier (2.25) is my second each-way banker, after his introduction over fences in a Grade 3. Again, I’m opposing Willie Mullins, though Twinlight should go well, and you can always back the one-paced Oscar Dan Dan with me.

SHAMROCK’S BETS
NAP: Roberto Goldback (1.55 Thurles)
NEXT BEST: Rising Time (1.25 Thurles)
EACH WAY: Grey Soldier (2.25 Thurles) and Golanbrook (3.25 Thurles)
