SHAMROCK’S DERBY DAY VIEWS: SHAMROCK looks ahead to the two Group races on Saturday’s Curragh card including the 150th Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at 6.30pm.

Narrowly denied a double yesterday when the next best Eshera won at 5/4 but the nap, On A Pedestal, was beaten half a length at 5/2 by a 20/1 chance 🙁

There are short priced favourites in the two feature races of the day at the Curragh this afternoon.

5:50 GAIN Railway Stakes (Group 2) (2yo, Class 1, 6f, 5 runners)

The Richard Hannon raider Log Out Island will start favourite for this after his excellent run at Royal Ascot when a half length second to Aidan O’Brien’s Waterloo Bridge in the Norfolk Stakes. The colt had previously made an impressive winning debut – also at Ascot – and is likely to improve further to give Richard Hannon his third winner in this race from the last five runnings. He should be equally as effective over the six furlong trip. Aidan O’Brien’s Painted Cliffs already has a six furlong win on his CV – that was a Leopardstown maiden last time out but this looks much tougher. Rockaway Valley won over course and distance last time out and will be a big danger if equally as effective on the faster ground.

6:30 150th Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby (Group 1) (3yo, Class 1, 1m 4f, 8 runners)

Given Aidan O’Brien has won this blue riband event for eight of the last nine years and has half of the eight strong field running for him today it would be foolhardy to write of his chances but it looks as though his best hope, French Derby runner-up Highland Reel, is going to play second fiddle to the Epsom runner up Jack Hobbs. Golden Horn looked a well above average Derby winner and Jack Hobbs has twice finished runner-up to him – in the Dante at York as well but surely should hold the likes of Storm The Stars who finished third at Epsom? With the HUGE benefit of hindsight Jack Hobbs was probably one of the best even money shots in recent history when he made his winning debut in a maiden at Wolverhampton !! Dermot Weld’s Radanpour looks overpriced at around 25 on BETDAQ. He’s still unbeaten and also proven over this trip. Hard though to look beyond Jack for the win.

SHAMROCK’S BETS:
NAP: Jack Hobbs (6.30 Curragh)
NEXT BEST: Log Out Island (5.50 Curragh)
